We talk a lot about the "Toulmin Model," without always exploring the ideas that Stephen Toulmin put forth. This week I would like for you to explain what the Toulmin way of thinking means to you. Why do you think we use it? What are the benefits? What are the limitations? How can it be used in different types of writing and thinking?

I believe View Park have implemented toulmin as it’s main writing structure because it is one of the basic argumentative structure. Maybe in learning this one structure when we do reach college the writing styles there will be either similar to the toulmin style or a mere imitation of it. If this is proven true then it would be a plus that I have spent four years of my life learning and perfecting this writing style. The only con with this is that when I do reach college and those writing styles have no connection with toulmin or little connection to it and I have wasted four years of my life on something that could be insufficient to furthering my writing career in college.
ReplyDeleteFrom my limited knowledge dealing with the structure of a lawyers argument it resembles the toulmin structure. One has there opening statement, which states what they’re going to try to prove. Then, comes the evidence and after that they tell how that relates back to the opening statement. So, this is one example of it being used in a different setting.

Anybody can write an good essay, but the toulmin model helps you write a great essay. It gives the structure to the essays we write for better understanding on it ourselves and to our readers. View Park uses the Toulmin model in order to make us better writers and metacognative thinkers. The limitations are that some people may want to expierement with there own way of writing and with the Toulmin model being apart of the the ciriclum you have to stick to it. It can be very useful in helping writing essays used for in History which is alot of fact. Overall the Toulmin model has been useful in all of my highschool writing.

We use the Touliman because it makes it easier to structure an essay. From 9th grade we learned Claim, clarification, Evidence, Warrent, Conclusion. 10th grade we learned an essential question, another evidence and warrent. Now that we are 11th grade Ap Literature and Composition students we use toiliman on an more difficult level.Its "buttering" us up for more critical writing and verbal explinations of literature. The touliman model can be used in news paper articles, and books.

The Toulmin model is used for simple structure essays. It is used to explain the main points of an essay and better yourself in those points. The Toulmin model limits the creativity of a natural essay in my opinion.

ReplyDeleteThe Toulmin way of thinking is just a more specified detailed way of explaining your writing. When you use Toulmin everything has to be broken down and analyzed. We use it probably to get a better understanding of what we're writing and it's a process that makes it impossible for you to write without knowing alot about your topic. Some limitations are you aren't really able to express your opinion because you're busy making sure your piece of work is in Toulmin model. I believe Toulmin can be used in any type of writing because it's a universal way of stating your point and proving it.

I am a good writer, and I enjoy it. When I came to View Park I was introduced to a new writing style called Toulmin Model. This style of writing was supposed to help me organize my thoughts and ideas a lot easier. At first I did not like writing in this kind of way, I was so used to writing in my own personal style. As I began to keep writing in this style I realized how it all tied in together so well. The benefit of this writing style is that it helps tie your essay in together and keep your thoughts together. This can be used in different styles of writing during college, or even while writing a normal story. I appreciate this style, although I have trouble with it sometimes, Im still learning. I know it will help me become a better writer.
ReplyDeleteThe Toulmin model essay is structured and specific according to what ever is being discussed. I feel like this type of essay is good as far as backing up claims about debatable questions. More specifically questions in a court of law, in which is where Toulmin model originated from. I feel like View Park has choose to use this style of writing because it will benefit us in the long run.
ReplyDeleteI think the Toulmin model is used because it helps to make sure our thoughts are organized. To me Toulmin is helpful because it helps me to make sure when I’m writing, I’m staying on track, and actually proving something. The argumentative part of Toulmin is its best and worse part. Its good because if you can turn something into an argument Toulmin is really good for helping you make your case. But if you cant take an issue and make it into an argument its hard, at least for me, to use Toulmin, and its even harder to do the evidence part of Toulmin, which in my opinion is one of the most important parts. I think if I had one complaint with Toulmin it would be that its an all or nothing formula. If you have a bad claim, you’re probable going to have weak evidence, and a terrible warrant.

I think the Toulmin model is a type of writing format that give students an easier way to express their thoughts on paper. It also gives the student a way to write in an organized way. The type of writing style helps us write more in detail, but for me it is a bit harder. I feel like I might need a little more help in writing in this type of style before I feel like I actually perfected the Toulmin Model criteria. I am so used to writing in my own way that sometimes it feels like the Toulmin restricts our writing a little bit except in certain subjects it helps a lot.

When it come to essay writing, I love using the Toulmin model. For me it is a simple outline of what I have to have in my essay in order for it to be good. When I first learned about it in 9th grade, I thought it was stupid, but once my essay writing improved my views on the Toulmin model changed. I don't see why people complain how its hard because for me its just very simple. The only limiations I face is that sometimes you can go off and you're supposed to stay within the method. However, now that I am in an AP English class, I find hard to stick the Toulmin model because we are asked to think metacognitvely and intergrate that into our essays. Now the essay writing has become more complex which makes it harder to stick the Toulmin method of writing.
ReplyDeleteI believe the Toulmin model is very useful because it helps you develop an argument first of all and then forces you to defend. This promotes argumentative thinking and gives people who are interested in the fields of debate and law an upper hand because they not only know how to form an argument, they also know how to defend it and say the reasoning behind their claim. However this way of writing has its limitations, when it is the only form of essays structure that is taught, from my own personal experience, you forget how to write other forms of essays like expository and persuasive. But some may argue that the Toulmin model is a form of persuasive essay with that said, I agree that is but limits our writing in free form because we are always thinking in this manner of Toulmin. Another limitation or advantage can be that this way of writing makes you think more but it also leaves room for second guessing in the sense that you might not believe that your claim can defended accurately when you carefully evaluate the circumstances of the situation. This is actually a good thing in law and politics.

I believe that View Park has enforced the Toulmin Model as a basis for all the essay writing going on to help the students become better writers. It provides a logical way of organizing an essay in such a way that is easier and more precisely to the point of the main argument I really agree with what DaVeon has said about its limitations and I would like to add that when being used to writing in the Toulmin Model sometimes it makes writing a lot harder because the writer is too focused on claim, clarification, evidence and warrant, that they forgot that they are writing hoe they feel, and often times this makes the essay not as strong as it could be. It can however, be modified to fit many other styles of writing, with just taking out the basic foundation of the Toulmin Model, the writer will have a well flowing essay, no matter what type.

Well, as you stated to us before, the toulmin is just a way of logically getting you point across in an organized way. You start off with a claim that basically states what you are trying to prove. Logically you have to explain the claim in a deeper manner because by definition it’s vague. This explanation is the conclusion. In order to prove your claim you have to have evidence but you can’t just introduce random evidences so you have to set your information up with a set-up that basically catches up the reader. Next you have to explain the evidence which is apparent because evidence can be ambiguous and its impertinent that the reader knows the direction in which you plan to communicate your point thoroughly. If you have more than one paragraph transition sentences and concluding sentences help the essay to flow and help the reader to concentrate on the exact point you are trying to prove. The conclusion brings it all together. It connects your claim and clarification to your evidence and warrant just to seal any issues of doubt and convince the reader that you have proven your point thoroughly. I don’t see any limitations because I never got into the habit of filling in the blanks. I always wanted to take it a step further and not only impress others, but impress myself. Although I would like to learn other writing styles that would strengthen me as a writer, I know the toulmin model will possibly strengthen me as a lawyer so it’s a huge perk.

The toulmin model is formated if you wanted to prove a claim in a argument or debate. It is limiting because it goes off of mostly facts and doesnt use much implying. It is also limiting because its harder to write without referring to what someone says. It is hard to tie it to personal experience because it is hard to find evidence fpom personal experiences.
ReplyDeleteI feel we use toulmin writing beacuse it allows us to organize our essays in an easy and basic way. The benifit is that it is a blue print for an essay. It clearly gives us a guidelines on what should go were. However, a lot of times people get so caught up in getting the model right that they overlook the information there writing about. The toulmin style of writing is generally used in essays.

Since this is only my third or fourth time using toulmin I can honestly say that it is a more organized way to right an essay. It helps me to actually think about what I'm going to right about, the evidence I'm going to use, and how I'm going to explain myself. Before I changed schools my essays were good, but the Toulmin essay helped to make them better. It also helps me to make sure that I don't change supjects in the middle of my essay. Some people can get caught up trying to write their essay the exact way the toulmin wants them to and dont put their own voice into it, when it is only a guide to help them write. I think it coul be used in other types of writing depending on how you think about it.
ReplyDeleteThe toulmin model helps me make sure that I write a clear claim for my essay and good some evidence to back it up. I think we use the toulmin model just to make sure that our essays at least have all of the required elements of an essay. We also use it so that we will know what needs to be in an essay to make it great. Even if we don't use it when we go to college, we will remember that a good essay needs a claim, clarification, evidence, and a warrant. However, since we use the toulmin model, our writing creativity is hendered. You don't really have a place to share all of your opinions and certain sentences have to be in certain places.
ReplyDeleteThe Toulmin Model is a way to write clear essays, well thought out and organized essays. Without it, people would probably write essays that have a simple claim, somewhat of a warrant, and a simple conclusion. The Toulmin Model takes writing to the next level. It makes it so that the essays are so clear that if the person reading the essay has no prior knowledge of the topic, they will still be able understand what is going on. These types of essays are really useful in professional fields of consisting of law and/or politics.

The toulmin model essay was given to us so that we can organize our thoughts. It was also given to us so it can help us out throught college. The benifits are that we work harder trying to find evidence from our books and we have a piece of literature that supports our thought. The limitations are that we can"t go back to the ways we used to write , which had no structures. In the long run the toulmin model is and organizer for our weitting.

I believe the toulmin model essay is given to us for organization.It helps us outline the steps you need to take for a good essay. The model challenges you to think. It is the skeleton or the framework to complete an essay. But I also think the toulmin forces you into a box. It makes you think claim clarification warrant, and if your missing any of those steps then your essay doesnt look good. Overall the toulmin model helps me stay organized and keeps my essays in construction

The toulmin model to me means going in to full detail about your writing, and always referring back to your claim. When writing a toulmin model essay you have to constantly refer back to your claim and support it with evidence. The reason why we use the toulmin model is for us as writers to learn how to go more into detail when we are writing that leds up to our argument.
