"There is no confusion like the confusion of a simple mind, and as we drove away Tom was feeling the hot whips of panic. His wife and his mistress, until an hour ago secure and inviolate, were slipping precipitately from his control."
Nick on Tom Buchanan
"Her voice is full of money."
Jay Gatsby on Daisy Buchanan.
Choose one of the above quotes from Ch. 7 and analyze the figurative language. Focus specifically on the effect the language has on you as a reader. Does it change your feelings or idea of a character? The narrator? Explain.

"Her voice is full of money" to me means that Daisys voice was rich. Meaning that she speaks well , you can hear in her voice that she comes from money. It makes me think that Daisy is well presented , but also very snobby . As if she talks with her nose up. To me this only shows the connection between Jay feeling he needs to have money to impress Daisy. To me hes saying not only does she just have money but she talks with it. Everything about Daisy is money.

ReplyDeleteTo me this shows that Tom is a simple minded person and a person focused on self. Not caring of other people. This is a characterictic of Tom that he is simple minded and self centered.
It doesnt change my feelings or ideas of Tom because i already depicted him as a simple minded and self centered character. It doesnt change my opinion of Nick either, because although Nick claims to be a non-judgemental person all he does is judge other people.

"There is no confusion like the confusion of a simple mind, and as we drove away Tom was feeling the hot whips of panic. His wife and his mistress, until an hour ago secure and inviolate, were slipping precipitately from his control."
ReplyDeleteBasically, Tom's problems were magnified because of his stupidity. The problems he was facing were too complex for his mind to compute so instinctively he panicked because he knew he was going to lose one or both of them quickly. The word precipitately, which means to hasten the occurrence of; bring about prematurely, hastily, or suddenly, can actually foreshadow the death of his mistress. The language intrigues me because the words and phrases make me want to read deeper to decode the upcoming mysteries the book holds. Although the language makes me feel sorry for Tom, my thoughts of him do not change because he deserves anything and everything he gets. When he entered into a relationship outside of his marriage he opened himself and his mistress up to dangers and unfortunate events they could not understand. The language also characterizes Nick even deeper because although he claims he doesn't judge people, he seems to contradict himself with almost every word he produces.

"Her voice is full of money"
ReplyDeleteThe figurative language used in this quote changes my view about Daisy. My perspective of Daisy is now that she is all about the money; that is what she has become about. She doesn't show emotion unless it has to do with money. This also signifies that Gatsby has a new view of Daisy as well.

"There is no confusion like the confusion of a simple mind, and as we drove away Tom was feeling the hot whips of panic. His wife and his mistress, until an hour ago secure and inviolate, were slipping precipitately from his control."
ReplyDeleteTo me this phrase shows a different side of tom. Before I thought he was a guy who was able to control his life, but here I see that actually he can’t. The main phrase that showed me that this is a different side of Tom is “feeling the hot whips of panic”. Before I thought Tom was too insensitive to panic, but to me that phrase was essentially saying here is a guy who actually does have emotions, and is having his emotions being totally played with. I feel this quote really underscores the theme of betrayal in this book.

"There is no confusion like the confusion of a simple mind, and as we drove away Tom was feeling the hot whips of panic. His wife and his mistress, until an hour ago secure and inviolate, were slipping precipitately from his control."
ReplyDeleteThis quote speaks to me because it illustrates the confusion and bewilderment that Tom was feeling when he found out that something was going on between Daisy and Gatsby. This made me want to read the book more because of the different twists and turns; it was like watching a soap opera. This also makes me feel sorry for Tom because as he is caught up in confusion his mistress is about to die and his wife is going to leave him for another man.

awww, i really like Jamil's post. I'm mad i didnt think of it that way. Darn you!!!
ReplyDelete“ Her voice was full of money.” Speaks to me the most because its shows that Daisy’s voice is very rich to Gatsby. Every time he hears it he feels as though she is shaped to speak well. It makes me think that Daisy is well presented and was taught how to speak well, but also shows that she is very snobby. As if she talks with her nose up. To me this only shows the connection between her and Gatsby. The idea OF HER VOICE BEING FULL OF MONEY makes me think Daisy comes from money and who ever she talks to it gives them the impression that she is rich.

"There is no confusion like the confusion of a simple mind, and as we drove away Tom was feeling the hot whips of panic. His wife and his mistress, until an hour ago secure and inviolate, were slipping precipitately from his control."
ReplyDeleteTo me Tom is startin to lose everything he worked hard to get. Hes used to being in control but with Gatsby and Wilson steping in hes lost the connection he had with control. It shows a new part of Toms personality, that hes scared. Hes scared of what might happen if he looses Myttle and Daisy.
"There is no confusion like the confusion of a simple mind, and as we drove away Tom was feeling the hot whips of panic. His wife and his mistress, until an hour ago secure and inviolate, were slipping precipitately from his control."
ReplyDeleteTom doesn't know what to do about everything that is happening around him. His wife is in love with another man and his mistress has just been killed. All the events probably haven't processed and he doesn't know how to react leaving him confused and full of panic. Before he used to think he had everything under control and nothing could go wrong, but now it seems as if everything that could go wrong for Tom has.

Delete"There is no confusion like the confusion of a simple mind, and as we drove away Tom was feeling the hot whips of panic. His wife and his mistress, until an hour ago secure and inviolate, were slipping precipitately from his control."
ReplyDeleteOnce again, Nick is showing me in the first part of the sentence, that he himself is not reliable. In the beginning of the book Nick said that he is non judgmental, but yet he calls Tom mentally incompetent to understand everything that was happening around him. However, both characters here, Nick and Tom, are victims of their own self-deception. Nick deceives himself into believing that he is an honest man, and Tom refuses to make himself believe that everything in which he has acquired through his lies, is all starting to vanish. Now Tom is starting to open up and break down as a character because he can no longer hide behind his facade of a "perfect life", he is starting to show the true essence of his emotions since everything is now all out in the open.

ReplyDeleteNick on Tom Buchanan
This shows how Tom likes to be in so much control especially in control of his women. It also shows how unreliable Nick is because in the beginng part of the book, he explains how he does not judge other people. Although in this quote it appears to be that he is judging Nick for dating other women while he is married. Part of this quote, Tom does not know how to stop everything from changing because he wants everything to stay the same. He is panicing for the changes that is coming his way and his loss of control on Daisy and Myrtle.
"Her voice is full of money."
ReplyDeleteThis quote shows just how rich Daisy Buchanan actually is. If her voice is "full of money", then you can hear in her voice that she is extremely wealthy. You can hear and clearly distinguish that she speaks with a certain classiness and eloquence. She is also likely to present herself very properly and speak in a snobby tone of voice.

"Her voice is full of money."
ReplyDeleteThis quote shows me that Daisy is wealthy. Meaning that she spoke with good dialect. The figurative language shows me that Daisy is used to nice things that rich people have. As a reader this shows me that people can be compared to different things such as money. This opened my mind to new and different phrases. This doesn’t change my feelings about Daisy because I already knew she was super wealthy.
" her voice was full of money"
ReplyDeleteTo me this quote mint that you could tell Daisy had come from a prominent rich family, and it made me kind of think she is stuck up, And Because, Gatsby knows her prestigious back ground he feels that he has to buy super expensive things and throw lavish parties to make her fall in love with him.

ReplyDeleteThis quote is saying that a simple mind is easily tricked so the simple-minded easily become more tricked than peolpe with more intelligence. Tom is a simple-minded person so the confusion he felt made him fearful of what might happen. This quote kind of puts Tom whole character in front of the reader at one time. It made me feel a little sad for him but not much.

"There is no confusion like the confusion of a simple mind, and as we drove away Tom was feeling the hot whips of panic. His wife and his mistress, until an hour ago secure and inviolate, were slipping precipitately from his control."
ReplyDeleteTo me this means that Tom is finally losing control over his women. At first Daisy and Myrtle were oblivious of each other and Tom was happy with having both women. One who could satisfy his sexual desires and one he could show off at the country club. Now that both are aware of each other, Tom can no longer manipulate either woman. This does not change my views on Tom, because from the beginning I realized that he was a liar and now that he has gotten caught in his web of lies, his happy seemingly perfect life is crumbling around him.
"Her voice is full of money"
ReplyDeleteEven though this quote is short it tells a lot about Daisy and Gatsby. It told me that when Daisy talks she speaks as if she had a lot of money, which she did. It made me think that she wanted everyone to know this obvious fact about her so she spoke and acted like she was higher than others. This seemed to be one of the qualities she had that Gatsby seemed to adore. Because he knew that Daisy loved being rich he spent most of his life becoming a millionare just to impress her. He had to have the bigest house, the nicest car, and a ton of expensive things just to show that he was worth her love. This showed me that Daisy was in fact Gatsby's ideal American Dream. He thought that he need to have this big house, big car, and a "nice",beautiful, rich girl to be happy.

ReplyDeleteNick on Tom Buchanan
As im reading this quote it shows Tom in a much different light than we've seen him in. Throughout the entire book we've see Tom as brutish and always in a physically angry state. this quote shows Tom when he has lost control of what he's held near and dear for so long. this weakened state shows Tom does have a more sensitve side and now his anger is expressed in a "confused state" rather than the forceful and decisive way he has been shown to handle it.
"Her voice is full of money"
ReplyDeleteThis quote to me is saying that the way Daisy spoke meant money. Meaning the way she articulated her words made her seem as if she was already a person living with a family of wealth. The way that Tom describes her makes it seem like she does not talk to anyone of the lower class because she sees them as being beneath her. So this quote also showed Jay Gatsby that in order for him to get Daisy's attention he has to be able to speak money.

"Her voice is full of money"
ReplyDeleteThis quote doesnt necesarily speak on her amount of money. I think it is focusing on the fact that her voice can get her anything she wants. You cannot have anything without paying for it. Well, material wise. So, Gatsby saying that her voice is full of money is signifying that her voice, is rather attracting and that she can actually get any man she desires.
- Ian Goings
In the first quote from chapter 7 it uses a simile to stress how confusion is worse when it's happening to a simple-minded person. This issue is being thrown into Tom's lap along with the "control" over the woman in his life changing in a way that makes them uncontrollable to Tom. This simile can get across the issue that Tom has. Also, with this quote the author uses the hyperbole "was feeling the hot whips of panic." As a reader I can infer that everything that happened to him was finally being comprehended and it all so overwhelming. This hyperbole gets the point across of how much or more of the multitude of his problems and very well.
ReplyDeleteHow the author phrased what he said made the narrator seem more reliable because he was able to explain the effects the issues had on Tom and accurately. The impression I get from his reliable and Nick is proving to be reliable.

ReplyDeleteThis quote speak about Tom's breakdown during the meeting Between himself, Daisy, and Gatsby. Based on Tom's actions in Chapter 7, he suddenly realize what he wants which is Daisy. Earlier in the book, he didnt show much affection towards her. For Example, Tom was not there during the birth of his child, and also he cheated on his wife with Myrtile Wilson serveral times. Now that he has faced reality that Daisy is about to leave him for someone else, he's in confusion state of mind, where he had to decide to have his sexual desires from Myrtile or to settle down with Daisy.

The quote is giving the reader an image, were they can see how Tom is miserably breaking into pieces because he has finally realized that slowly he is losing Daisy and Mrytle. He had them both secrure for a short period of time but in the long run he couldn't have both women in his life.

ReplyDeleteDaisy comes from a wealthy family, she has bee brought up around money and nothing other. To me it seems as if Daisy speaks of money. This quote to me is saying that anyone could tell that Daisy is from money just by the way she speaks.
