SONNET 116
Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come:
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.
I thought the poem was really nice, but honestly I don’t like poetry that much. So when I was reading the sonnet I was think that the words were really nice and all, but I can’t really connect to it. I don’t know why, but I never quite get poetry. I think I have a problem really understanding what’s going on in the text. So I suppose for this next unit I’ll have to really work hard to get the whole interpretation thing.

This is the only sonnet I can truly remember reading so from reading this I feel confused. The syntax of the sonnet is a little to complex for me. I indeed did try to understand what’s the theme of the poem and if I don’t really get the full idea. From what I do understand I think it is talking about love and how it’s in a since the highest thing that can never be changed. The poem we read in the past seems less complex in it’s syntax. I was able to understand and get a full understanding of that poem easier then the sonnet 116. With all and all it was a nice poem from what I understood.

I agree with Leilani 100%.
ReplyDeleteI was very confused with reading this sonnet. I mostly think because its late, but i would have to read it more than twice to understand. I don't remember the last poem very well, but I believe it was less complex to understand.

leilani the date is clearly on the comment when posted lmao.
ReplyDeleteIt is not that I dont understand poetry, it is that I dont understand poetry that was written by men that wore extremely tight pants and used up to three stanzas just to say something as simple as "her hair was blond", like WIlliam Shakespeare. Just as Jamil said, the poem was really nice, but every two to three lines I started to get confused and had to at least try and figure out what he was talking about. The lines that I understood right away or that I eventually understood after rereading it over and over again, were really interesting. Like lines 11 and 12, "Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks, but it bears it out even to the edge of doom." I find these two lines interesting because they seem to be saying something negative about love, but then again it seems like it could be saying something positive about love. Shakespeare is so confusing sometimes.
ReplyDeleteI like poetry that's interesting. I don't like to read sonnets because usually they were written by Shakespeare and I don't understand Shakespeare. This poem is related to the previous blog poem because the poems have similar themes. The theme have to do is transferred or deteriating love.

When I read sonnets I get a little confused. Honestly I don’t remember the other poem we read by Shakespeare. But they probably connect in many ways. I’m not a fan of old poetry, but I’m always interested to learn new things. In my opinion this poem is about love, and how it may change over time. This poem connects to the other poem we read earlier because both poems are about love. I’m kind of nervous to begin poetry, because it’s so hard to interpret at times, but I guess well see what happens.

When I usually read sonnets , I try to go into it with an open mind. The old english it is written is very hard to understand and interpet. I do not remember reading the previous poem posted , but knowing Shakespeare , it's usually about love.I'm at a crossroads about entering this unit, but it may surprise me.

I thought the poem was nice, however it was very confusing I kept getting lost. The theme of this poem and the other poems we did earlier in the semester is love. I am excited to start the new unit on poetry because I enjoy reading poems. However, I hate writing poems.

I thought the poem was really nice. In a way I understand it,but a problem I had was trying to interpet what the author is saying. Compared to the Pablo Neruda's poem we read earlier this year, this poem is talking about love in general versus Pablo Neruda's poem, where the author was taking about his/her relationship. I really enjoy reading poems,to analyze what the author is saying because it's very interesting to me. And also I love writing my own poetry.

Sometimes I like poems and sometimes I don't. It depends on how complex it is and what the poem is about. Usually when a poem is called a sonnet I tend to think of it as a love poem. This poem was hard for me to understand at first so I had to read it over two more times. I think it sounds pretty good but I liked the Pablo Neruda's poem a lot more. I think this is because the Pablo Neruda poem was easier to understand while this is a poem with more complex metaphors. Also this poem was about love while the other was about a relationship.
ReplyDeleteWhen my mood is sour, sonnets anger me. I don’t like to analyze them, but I do it sub-consciously and it takes too much energy. Sonnets are deep and ambiguous especially compared to the poems we read at the beginning of the year. They aren’t hard per se, just time consuming and complex. If you understand the gist of Shakespeare then sonnets such as this one are easy.

When I read sonnets depending on how it is writen sometimes Im very confused depending on how the language is used. The love poem at the begining of the semester was simular to this sonnet because they were both confusing and had hidden meanings . Both the poem has to be read several times in order for you to truly understand it.

From what i could tell, this sonnet is Shakespeare's opinion of love. He believes that if love is not pure then it is not love. The language is difficult to understand which makes the poem hard to comprehend, taking away what other, more experienced, poets might call beauty. The poem before and sonnet 116 have very similar themes because they both believe that once there is an impure "kink" in one's love, it shall, inevitably, die.
ReplyDeleteI'm really looking forward to this poetry unit

ReplyDeleteWhen I usually read sonnets, I have to read the sonnet more than once. Except when I read the poem over and over again I might not understand what the poem is trying to say. I don't really remember the last poem that we read earlier this semester, but I think it was as complex as this sonnet. I'm really excited to start this unit, but I am not ready to actually write a poem myself.

It takes me a while to fully understand poetry in general. In this sonnet I got confused because it seemed like every line contradicted the one before it. This poem compared to the last one was harder for me to understand. I'm not sure if it's because the last poem we went over in 9th grade so it was already clear to me or if it was just easier for me to grasp. I understand both poems were about love and how it does have it's negative effects sometimes.

This sonnet is confusing; because it makes a lot of relations to other things that have to do with love that are not directed. The second time I read it I got a more clear understanding as to what the poem was saying. How ever sonnet I still was left a little bit confused. Sonnets are not my favorite

When reading poetry in general it becomes extremely confusing the first time I read the poem that's why I have to always read poetry more than once. I love the flow of different poetry, it makes me think more in debt about what the poet is trying to say to its reader. When reading Shakespeare poems I become so confused until I start to fully understand what exactly he is trying to express to the reader.

Sorry I was so late.
The first thing that came to my mind when I read this sonnet was I am so confused. The various antithesis he uses was the reason I was confused. Compared to the other poems this one was harder to understand. Even though I generally like sonnets this one I didn't like because the message wasn't clear to me of what he was trying to say.
