Don't Stop Believing. . .oops not that Journey.

I'm actually referring to the journey our characters are about to take. We are about to study the Canterbury Tales which tells the story of a pilgrimage. In your opinion, how might a journey be a symbol in literature? Why would it be important? Can you find an example of a story where the journey was central to the theme? Cite and analyze an example.

Thanks,

  1. To me the journey symbolizes the right of passage that a character must undergoe in order to become a better person. The journey is so important because it not only moves the plot along but it also is the majority of the plot. An example of how the journey is related to the theme is in Raisin in the Sun, Walter's journey becoming a man is central to one of the themes in the Raisin in the Sun.

  2. The journey symbolizes the obstacles that a person or character must go through in order to to seek a powerful or noble position in the kingdom. An example is "And made agreement that we'd early rise to take the road,as you I will apprise".The narrator has made a sacrifce to wake up early to make the trip and is willing to do whatever to become a knight.

  3. Usually journeys in literature are symbols for maturing and growing. Journeys are important because they give characters the valuable experience they need in order to be successful. In the Odyssey the Odysseus’s journey was the central theme of the story. It was through his journey back home that he became the hero he needed to be.

  5. I think journeys in literature are symbols of the process a character must go through in order to gain something. Some characters learn to be better people during their journey and others learn how to be confident. Like in the movie The OZ, after going on a long journey to get home Dorthy finally realizes that she needed to get out of her comfort zone and try something new. She need to get out and see the rest of the world. She was able to gain more confidence in herself by the end of her journey.

  6. The journey of a story is what draws in a reader because you can look at the journey and picture yourself doing the same things and making the same decisions. The journey a story can take you on is essential to any piece of literature. In Their eyes were watching God by Zora Neale Hurston Janie's journey to find true love and freedom takes her through many trails and tribulations, its the type of story that grabs you in because you want to know how it feels to be free.

  7. The journey in literary device can be defined as an overcoming of an issue one might be facing, or simply the finding of a person’s inner self. The discovering of one’s self is discovering who you truly are. Journey’s for a character be it the protagonist or even the antagonist grabs the attention of readers, because people enjoy to see how the characters over come their problems. Such as in “ The Catcher in the Rye,” by J.D. Salinger, how the protagonist, Holden Caulfield, gets suspended from the boarding school he attended and decides to go home. On his journey back home he encounters numerous issues that reveals the reasoning behind why he wants to protect children’s innocence. He is like many Americans who want to preserve innocence of their children because they don’t want their children to suffer from it. His reasoning becomes truly evident when he starts to talk about the museum he use to go to as a kid, He described the best thing about the museum, “ was that everything always stayed right where it was” (157). Hold appreciates that things stay the same, and when things stay the same they don’t mature or grow in any shape or form. He also goes further in saying, “ certain things they should stay the way they are. You ought to be able to sick them in one of those big glass cases.” (158) Holden wants things to stay the way they are and even takes it further buy wanting the innocence of a child to be preserved so the sins of the world will ever get to them.
The theme of preservation of innocence is the backbone of “ The Catcher in the Rye.” Holden’s journey back home in the end causes his true purpose for what he does to be shown, thus making the story surrounded about his journey back home.

  8. A journey symbolizes what the character must go through to become a better, more mature person. This is important because it's what draws people to read the book. A great example of a story in which the journey is central to the theme is Harry Potter. The Entire story is the journey, that Harry and his friends go through to to find what happened to his parents

  9. I feel the journeys in literature can draw reader's in and make them imagine that they are actually doing the journey themselves. The heroes go through these journeys and gain life long lessons and love along the way. For example, Hercules, he went through the journey of having to kill Hades and getting true love in the end. Another example could be Harry Potter because he had to go through a lot of journeys with his friends to save the Wizarding World.

  10. In literature, a journey could symbolize the long emotional, mental, and physical challeneges a character must go through in order to become a better person. The character's learn life lessons and learn about themselves in order to become a different person by the end of the novel. In the novel InkHeart by Cornelia Funke, the character Meggie goes on a journey to save her father. Along the way she learns secrets about her family and discovers her true potential by the end of the book. The physical obstacles the character may face can be a symbol of the mental turmoil that might be going on with the character. For example if a character has to save his friend from a bear his inner turmoil could be that he is afraid of bears or afraid to be courageous. By saving his friend he has proven to be courageos and probably has overcome his fear of bears.
