If You Forget Me

I want you to know
one thing.

You know how this is:
if I look
at the crystal moon, at the red branch
of the slow autumn at my window,
if I touch
near the fire
the impalpable ash
or the wrinkled body of the log,
everything carries me to you,
as if everything that exists,
aromas, light, metals,
were little boats
that sail
toward those isles of yours that wait for me.

Well, now,
if little by little you stop loving me
I shall stop loving you little by little.

If suddenly
you forget me
do not look for me,
for I shall already have forgotten you.

If you think it long and mad,
the wind of banners
that passes through my life,
and you decide
to leave me at the shore
of the heart where I have roots,
remember
that on that day,
at that hour,
I shall lift my arms
and my roots will set off
to seek another land.

But
if each day,
each hour,
you feel that you are destined for me
with implacable sweetness,
if each day a flower
climbs up to your lips to seek me,
ah my love, ah my own,
in me all that fire is repeated,
in me nothing is extinguished or forgotten,
my love feeds on your love, beloved,
and as long as you live it will be in your arms
without leaving mine.

  1. Last Friday, my experience reading "A Barred Owl" and "The History Teacher" was mildly difficult. The poems were not that complex but I did have to read them more than once. The handout actually did not help me that much; I was already aware of how to read a poem before I read the handout. Although, I did not know to test my comprehension of the poem by using the 5 W's and the H.

    "If You Forget Me"
    1) The title of the poem makes me assume that the poem is going to be about a person who has a significant other that has forgotton or might forget about him/her.
2)I read the poem straight through.
3)Who: A person in love (possibly a man)
What: A person who expresses what will be the effects if the significant other leaves him/her.
Where: In the person's home and on the beach.
When: After the significant other leaves the person.
Why: To tell the person that he/she loves the significant other but if the significant other decided to move on, he/she will do so too.
How: By not looking for the significant other, by not loving the significant other anymore, and forgeting about the significant other as well.

  3. My expierence with reading "The Barred Owl" and "The History Teacher" was intresting. Both poems to me talked about adults lying to save childrens innocence. Its makes you think even at this age do our parents and the adults that influence our lives lie to protect us from the truth.

    * The title seems like a threat to me, if you forget me this is whats going to happen.
    * Read Poem.
    * Who: someone speaking to there signifigant other.
What:the person is telling his signifigant other whats gonna happen if he/she ever decides to leave.
    Where:Not Told.
    When: Not Told.
Why: To express that the person will do if their signifigant other leaves them.
How: By telling the signifigant other that if they were to leave the person will not be there if they ever decided to come back, but however if they stayed their love would last forever.

  4. With reading the two poems " A Barred Owl" and " The History Teacher" there was a similar experience for them. They both posses the theme of hiding the real truth from the young and adolescences. In doing so shielding them and making them naive to the real world around them and the dangerous out there. Although the worksheet was there to assist with the poems I had my own method of analyzing them. However, I did try using the work sheet on one poem and it was explained more efficiently what the poem was about.

1.The Poem “ If You Forget Me” can be inferred to be about the pros and cons of forgetting a person who know.

    2.Read it through.

3.Who: Referring to a loved one
What: when one tries to do something to you end up doing it to them such as “ if little by little you stop loving me
I shall stop loving you little by little.”
    When: Autumn
    Where: In some one’s room.
Why: To show what will happen if one tries to forget another that the are also forgotten or even more blunt that when one tries to do a deed to someone it is also done back to them.
How: It was well written Poem with lots of examples that are easy to understand and relate to. As if the poet had this happen to him or even him doing that to some one.

  6. My experience on reading the two poems, "A Barred Owl" and "The History Teacher" wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. "A Barred Owl" was easy to get into because it was in a form of a story. "The History Teacher" was a bit difficult, due to the fact I couldn't get into it, meaning that nothing didn't catch my attention to keep on reading.

    * The title, "If You Forget Me" seems like a poem about a lost love.
    *Read The poem carefully
    *Who: A lost love One
What:The Author is talking about a lost love due to life ways of time passing."If suddenly you forget me do not look for me,
for I shall already have forgotten you."
When: Autumn "if I look at the crystal moon, at the red branch of the slow autumn at my window."
Why: The Purpose Of this poem is to show, how time affect ones relationship. through out the poem the author talks about what things reminds he/she of that lover."if I touch
near the fire the impalpable ash
or the wrinkled body of the log, everything carries me to you, as if everything that exists, aromas, light, metals, were little boats
that sail toward those isles of yours that wait for me."
Where:In a room. "if I look at the crystal moon, at the red branch of the slow autumn at my window."

  7. The two poems were of contrasting styles to me. " A Barred Owl" was very unclear and had I to discuss it with my partner and read the poem over to fully understand it. Where as "The History Teacher" was very amusing to me and the theme of the poem was clear. The assignment on last Friday really helped me with the " A Barred Owl" because at first I didn't get it, so it brought greater understanding an d helped me to comprehend the material better.

    1. The Poem " If You Forget Me" is about some one who is trying to get over a relationship and is telling his ex that I'm not going to lament over you because we are not in a relationship anymore, I am going to move on.

    2. I read it through, twice.

3.WHO: This poem is referring to a past relationship between a the author and I woman.

WHAT: When someone tries to get over their ex.

    WHEN: Fall

WHERE: This was written in the man's room.

WHY: To show the effects of a past relationship that left feelings of resentment and regret. So the author tries to move on before his ex.

HOW: Used the literary devices such as anthesis and imagery to make the reader feel the emotions that the author is going through.

  8. My experience last Friday with the poems "A Barred Owl" and "The History Teacher" went fairly well. I understood them and the handouts made it easy for me to be able to recognize the similar themes of the poems. They both were stories that tried to shield children from the truth. In the poems they told the children things that would appeal to their ears and not frighten them.

    1. The title "If You Forget Me" makes me think that the poem is going to be about someone warning another person what is going to happen if they forget them.

    2. I read it through without stopping and I got the sense that the poem was very dramatic. It almost had like a threatening tone to it, almost like the person doesn't honestly care they're going to treat you like you treat them.

    3. Who: A person in love that is skeptical of where the relationship is heading.

What: A person is warning their mate of how their actions will affect their relationship.

When: Autumn or a beautiful day

Where: bedroom, beach, or it could be anywhere over an expanded period of time

Why: The purpose of this poem is to show how your actions will affect someone. If you forget them they will forget you. If you love them, they will love you. It's similar to a what you give is what you'll get situation.

How: The poem was written in a serious tone. It was the type of poem that when you first read you might have understood it a little, but you had to re-read another two or three times to get the full effect.

  9. When I read the two poems last week, I was lost for a while. I had to red them about five times each to understand everything important about them.

The title of the poem makes me assume that he is going to tell someone what the consequence will be for forgetting him.

I read the poem out loud to myself once.

Who:The narrator is talking to a woman that he is in a relationship with.

What:The poem is saying that if the woman stops loving the narrator even for a minute, then he'll stop loving her forever.

When:The poem was written in the autumn.

Where:The poem was created inside the narrator's house.

Why: It was created to let the woman know exactly what would happen if she ever stopped loving him.

How:The poem was written with a lot of creative language that allows the reader to visualize the things that he is saying.

  10. With the poems "A Barred Owl" and "The History Teacher",the worksheet did help me understand the two poems, and it made analyzing the poems easier. The two poems has the same theme as to lying protecting children of their innocence.

    1. The poem title makes me think that a partner in a relationship is sensing the affection between the couple is withering away.

    2. The poem is about a partner in a relationship that warns the other partner that if he or she begins to lose love for them, the will do the same

  11. Personally I didn’t like either poem. They were both confusing, and the worksheet only made it more difficult, because I started second guessing myself.
    1) The title make me think its foreshadowing events that will happen if the narrator’s name is forgotten
    2) Poem Read
    3) Who: The person that the narrator is referring to
What: The effects of the relationship being broken up
When: The poem mentions autumn, so it probably happens in fall
    Where: In nature
Why: The main point of this poem is to show what will happen if the relationship the reader is in, doesn’t go well
How: Used imagery so that readers could vividly see the effects of a break-up

  13. Personally, I had to read over "A Bared Owl", with my partner a couple of times and discuss it with him. The assignment also helped me understand the poem even more because it made me think what the poem was saying. Although "The History Teacher" was easy to understand and was really amusing.

    1. Title: The title of the poem makes me think about two people that were in a broken relationship but one of them are still in love with the other.

    2. Poem Read

    3. Who: The narrator is a lost loved one and a women.

What: The narrator is trying to stop their feelings for their ex-girlfriend.

When: This poem happens during the fall.

Where: This was written in the narrator's home.

Why: The author is trying to move on from his' broken relationship, but is feeling resentment and regret. So he tries to get them back, but he realizes that they have moved on.

How: The poem gave a lot of good examples and thoroughly explained the situation. The poem also gave a great explanation on how the narrator was feeling towards the broken relationship.

  14. When I read the two poems in class week I was a little confused at first. The poem “The Barred Owl” was difficult to interpret, but as I kept reading I sort of got the idea. The poem “The History Teacher” was a very good poem. It made a lot of sense as to how parents, or adults might try and sugarcoat things in the real world. How they sometimes can tell you certain things to comfort you, but it ends up being nothing like they told you. Honestly the handout given didn’t really help me, it actually confused me a little more, but I got through it.

    1) The Poem “ if you Forget Me”, is about some one who has had their heartbroken. This person is emotionally unstable, and makes it clear that they are not going to sit back and mope about their heartache.

    2) Read the poem thoroughly.

    3) Who: A confused person torn between leaving their mate, and accepting heartache.

    4) What: A love stricken person, who isn’t sure where their relationship is headed.

    5) Where: Wherever the narrator felt they wanted to write their poem.

    6) When: in autumn.

    7) How: The poem was written in a sad tone. This person was serious about their relationship, and obviously had their heartbroken. This shows how what you do can affect anyone and everyone around you.

    8) Why: The purpose of this poem is to use some one as a victim of heartbreak. It shows that your actions can affect the way some one feels about you in a heartbeat. Basically the lesson of this poem is to think twice before you make any decisions, whether it is in life, or in a relationship.

  16. My Experience reading "The Barred Owl" and "The History Teacher" was pleasant I enjoyed both poems a lot. It was very interesting to see, how adults come up with elaborate story to shied children from the truth, in a attempt to save there innocence. These poems also made me wonder how many times in the past has an adult came up with a story, in the hopes of protect my innocence? and even at this age do any adults still tell me stories to try and protect me from the truth? The The worksheet was very informative. It helped me better analyze the poems.

1)The poems tittle "If you Forget Me" makes me think that the poem is gonna be about a couple in a long distance relationship, and one of the partners is wronging the other that if they forget about them, this is what's gonna happen.

2)I read through it three times

    3) WHO: A man and his significant other
WHAT: A man who is telling this significant other what will happen if she forgets about him. Or continues to love him.
    WHEN: In Autumn
    WHERE: In the narrators room/house
WHY: To in form his significant other that if she forgets about him then he will do the same but if she continues to love him and keep him on her mind the he will do the same
HOW: The poem used a lot of imagery to paint a vivid picture in our heads of what he would do if she forgot and what he would would happen if she remembered

  18. When I read both poems in class last week , I felt that they were both trying to interpret how adults try to keep childrens' innocence alive. They try to be a bit like a catcher in the rye. I felt that yes indeed the worksheet was helpful by reading the titles and the poem over you do understand it even better. In the poems the youth is curious but when they ask questions they are answered with a mere answer that will calm there curiosity for time being.

    THE STEPS:

    1) The poems title "If You Forget Me", is a title that made me think of someone forgetting another person.

    2) Read the peom over

    3) Who: A person wants to know if they are loved back.

What: This poem is about a person that is in love with another person but does not know if he/she is loved back and would like to know so if so they can be together, and if not loved back the person could be forgotten.

When: During autumn or during any given day.

Where: The poem was written where ever Pablo Neruda was at that time. Whick could have been all over latin america.

why: This poem was written by Pablo Neruda so that people can understand that love is difficult. You can be in love with a person but they don't have the slightest idea and its just killing you inside to know that they love you back so you can be together or you want to know that they don't love you so you can move on.

How: The poem was well detailed so that the audience could connect with the person in love. So they could feel the anxiety of how badly they wanted to know if they were loved.

  19. My experience with the poem was quite confusing , themes with the poems were amusing and somewhat sad. "The Barred Owl" gave me a childlike feeling and geared towards children.
"The History Teacher" I didn't understand but I know it had something to do with adults and chldren alike. Overall , the peices of text were okay, just a bit complex.

1)The poem title "If You Forget Me" made me think that the poem was about a love lost.

    2)I re-read the poem again.

3)Who: Someone who is may be a scorned lover or bitter about a break up.

What: The poem is about a person(assuming a male) who isnt quite sure if he is missed by
a former lover and while he still loves her , he wants to know if she loves him just as much or even back.

    When:Fall

Where:The poem could have been written as recent as today or a maybe as far as decades ago.

Why:The poem was written by a man (Pablo Neruda), I beileve it was written from personal
experience and it was to show heartbreak and pain how it affects the heart and the soul and as well how much people will invest in someone else and dont necessairly reap the benfits.

How:The poem was written for the reader to idenitfy with the authors pain and his feelings and as well to show that love isnt as easy as we think because not all good things can last forever.

  20. In my opinion the poems were not difficult to understand, I just really had to analyze it and not skim over it. The worksheets helped ion reading the poem because they helped me answer the correct questions in order to gain deeper understanding.

1)The title "If You Forget Me" leads me to believe that this poem is about a man/woman that wants their lover to something if they happen to forget them.

    2)Read the poem

    3)Who: Pablo Neruda.

btw I absolutely love this poem. We read it freshman year in Academic Literacy.

  21. The poem “The Barred Owl” confused me at first. I had to reread the poem four times before I was able to some what understand the meaning. I also had to break down each stanza and read it slowly. I thought about what the owl might be talking asking the child. I was reminded that the owl was speaking, which is abnormal in itself, but it was also asking a question which meant it was confused. I know that if I saw an owl, and heard it talking, as a child, I would be scared as well. Once I understood these two concepts it was easier to understand the poem. The poem was good though. I liked the poem “The History Teacher”, more because it was easier for me to understand. I also knew the subjects that were being discussed in the poem and that amused me. I also liked how the teacher did admit that he knew that his students weren’t listening to him but I liked that he still hoped that they were learning. That seemed like something other teachers can relate to. The worksheet was very helpful in helping me understand both poems.

    1. The title "If You Forget Me" made me feel sad right away. I thought that the poem might be about a guy who is either dying or his girlfriend/wife might be leaving him.

    2. I read the poem twice. The second time I read it slowly.

    3. Who: The poem is about a young man

What: The poem is about a young man who is giving his girlfriend an ultimatum.

When: The poem was written during the time of day when it's still light out but it's getting darker.

Where: The poem was written at a beach house that was near a wooded area.

Why: The poem was written so that the young man's girlfriend will decicde if she wants to be with him or not. He wasn't going to put up with her being unsure in the relationship. He wanted the relationship to become more serious and if she wasn't ready for that he was going to move on.

How: The poem used lots of visual imagery to describe the young man's eamotions. It is also written in free verse.

What: The poem is about a guy who is breaking up with his girlfriend.

Where: The poem was written at the beach.

Why: The poem was written so that the guy's girlfriend will decicde if she wants to be in the relationship or not. If she was going to stay with him they had to get serious.

  23. My experience with the poem was that i found them to be very difficult as far as understanding what the pome was really talking about. the theme of the poem was clear. so i didn't fined it to be so hard to understand.

    1. The Poem " If You Forget Me" is about some one who is trying to get over a relationship with some one that has done something to them. This person seems to be able to move on with what ever problem they where facing and by passed it.

  24. My first time reading the poem “ The Barred Owl” it was very confusing to me, but the second time I read it I had a better understanding of it because I took my time reading it. The handout also made the poem easier to read because it required me to not only look at the major details in the poem, but the small ones to, like the words the author used in the poem to let the readers know what the poem was about. “The History Teacher” was easier for me to read because I was able to apply the steps from the handout as I was reading the poem the first time instead of just reading through it and not understanding what the poem was about.

    1. The title of the poem “If You Forget Me” made me believe that the poem would either be about a death or it would be about someone leaving a loved one some how.

    2. I read the poem straight through.

    3. Who: Someone who believes that their current relationship could end.

What: They are telling their loved one that their actions could lead to the end of their relationship.

When: On a nice day in autumn

Why: The author feels like he no longer want to be in a relationship, but he realizes that his feelings for his loved one will never go away.

How: The author uses similes and metaphors to express how he feels about the situation.

    The Steps:

    1) The title of this poem made me think that it was going to be about a love poem between two lovers, that have broken up and going through there problems or about a death in a family.

    2) I read it two times straight through.

    3) Who: The poem is talking about a past relationship with another person.

What: The poem is talking about how a person loves he/she but doesn't know if that person loves them back.

    Where: The season of Autumn

When: The poem was written , where the Author was at during that time.

Why: The Author wrote this piece of poetry to express his feelings on how if one person was in love and felt as if their significant other did not love them or was loosing feelings for the person.

How: The poem was written in a sad tone but in deep thought. The person took the relationship serious and wanted to felt loved but wasn't by the partner in the relationship
