What are your first impressions? Do you find the story compelling? What challenges you? What do you like? Dislike? What do you think is going to happen?

The Great Gatsby is very interesting to me. I think that Nick is funny in his own hipocritical manner, and that he will learn from his mistakes of judgement soon.
ReplyDeleteThe story is very compelling. I cannot stop thinking about what is going to happen next. No challenges yet. I have a feeling they will make themselves visible soon.
I like the fact that the book always keeps me guessing regardless if I have an assumption that seems to be very accurate. I have no dislikes at the moment.
My first impression of The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald was somewhat the same of Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Salinger based off the unreliable character, Nick Carraway, who reminds me of Holden Caulfield. Next, as we traveled deeper into the book, I was surprised at the swift introduction of deceit, pride and adultery. These aspects create a compelling nature of the book. The way Fitzgerald uses literary devices such as alliteration, hyperbolic language, and metaphors keeps the reader intrigued. I like the drama and ambiguity of the book because it leaves space for the imagination to explore. On the other hand, I dislike the unreliable nature of Nick because it increases the difficulty of interpreting what the narrator truly means. We can infer that later in the story the narrator will have an epiphany and realize that he is judgmental. Also, we can infer from certain symbols in the beginning of chapter two that the cheating husband – Tom Buchanan, and the cheating mechanic’s wife – Myrtle, will at some time get caught in their adulterous actions.

The Great Gatsby has started off mildly interesting to me. I can tell that all the events and the introduction of the characters are going to lead up to a very significant plot later on in the novel. I like how the story jumped right into some interesting details but just enough not to tell the whole story.
ReplyDeleteSome challenges I have while reading the story are the long sentences. It seems that a lot of the sentences are rather long and they are filled with a great deal of description. I also like how Fitzgerald uses many metaphors and hyperboles to describe the characters and the events in the story.
I think Nick is going to fall in love with Daisy and try to get her to leave Tom Buchanan. Nick is going to end up evolving and acting like Tom trying to become a person he isn't just to impress people.

My first impressions of the book were that this would be a diffucult book to read if I did not take time to fully understand it because of the very complex language that is presented in it. This language adds to aura of the narrator Nick Carraway who is sophisticted but yet a hypocritical individual. This storyline is vey interesting because of the social revelence of the plot, from the time period in which it takes and even in today. A love the whole complexity and abstact feel of the book, the only things I dislike about the book is that it may not be easy to comprehend and fully understand right away; but we can agree that this will be the case with any book we read in AP Literature this year.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Daisy will end up staying with Tom, where as Nick will continue be a hautuer and look down on individuals who smuggle alcohol, when he will smuggle it himself.

So far I have been very intrested in the Great Gatsby, usually I would not be reading the book but rushing to read it towards the essay, but this book has not been boring and it is very intresting. The charcaters and their traits are very realistic. The vocab is very challanging, but the vocab logs help with it. So far theres nothing i dislike but you never know what the future holds. The characters are very realistic and have realistic traits that remind my of myself, friends, and family .
ReplyDeleteI predict that Nick will befriend Gatsbyand try to imitate him, but he will still critize Gatsby. I also predict that Tom and Myrtles relationship will depict the downfall of all the other characters, because they are all connected through this affair.

My first impression of the book is that its going to be interesting. I like the idea of studying moral decline, and I also like the tone the author used when writing the story. I think at the end of the book Nick will end up falling into the very problems he claims he avoids. I think sex is going to play an important role in the book, and in Nick's ultimate decline since already several scenes of the book are filled with promiscuity. I would definitely recommend this book, to people who like to read for a hobby.

At first i thought that The Great Gatsby was going to be very boring and difficult to understand. I will admit that the reading is a bit difficult due to the vocabulary and use of metaphors but I really do enjoy the book. The idea that the book is centered around moral decline grasps my attetion. Also the book is pretty funny when it talks about what's going on in the character's lives. The way the character's are projected helps me visually see them and makes them feel more realistic.
ReplyDeleteAs of now I think that Jay Gatsby is going to die in the end and that Nick will become an outcast. I also think that Daisy is going to leave Tom because he is cheating on her and he is abusive.
When I first start reading The Great Gatsby it did not intrigue me, not even a little. I thought the novel was going to be very interesting because of the detailed reviews people had given me; but I have not been interested with the first couple of chapters.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I dislike that the novel is very complex and mildly difficult to read, I like that the novel challenges me. Honestly, I do not a good idea about what is going to happen in the novel but i do think that certain secrets are going to be revealed about certain characters, for example: Mr. J. Gatsby.

When first trying to read The Great Gatsby, I did not think taht it would be interesting at all. Just from the cover and the name of the book. As I read the first chapter, I was still not at all interested in thhe book, and wished that it was a book that would be over soon, just by the size of the book.
ReplyDeleteNow I that I am starting to get some insight into the plot of the book, I am gradually getting more intrigued in what is happening. I love that the traits of each character are very realistic, which makes it alot easier to comprehend and relate to them. No dislikes so far, but I have a feeling that I will have some in the near future.
I predict that at one of Gatsby's parties, the things that were handled behind closed doors, would come to light. Possibly someone dies ,as well, because of all of the drama taht is going on.

Personally, I thought the book was going to be boring, or hard to read. But as we read it in class and I read it at home its gets more and more interesting. The story is compelling because you never know what’s going to happen next. A lot of unexpected things happen in the first two chapters alone. The thing that challenges me most about the book is the vocabulary. It’s hard to understand, but since you give us the hard words to define it becomes easier along the way.
ReplyDeleteWhat I don’t like about this book is that everyone is sort of “fake” in his or her own way. Its crazy how everyone in this story tries so hard to impress one another so bad they’re willing to do whatever it takes. Another thing that attracts me to this book is how one man (Tom) could be so infatuated with Mr. Gatsby it kind of weird, but interesting. In the end of the story I think that Tom will realize Mr. Gatsby isn’t “ Gods gift to earth” and will finally stop comparing himself to him.

When I first started reading this book I assumed it would be another one of those hard reads. A book that a kid my age wouldnt appreciate. So I was not intrigued with the book at first, but as I began to read the book I have found myself wanting to read the book now.
ReplyDeleteI find this a challenge that I enjoy , Scott Fitzgerald uses a wide variety of figurative language. He writes with similes, metaphors, hyperboles, and etc. I want to look for the figurative language because it makes the reading more enjoyable , once you figure out what hes exactly saying.
I also think with these excessive parties that Gatsby is looking for someone. At the end of the book I think someone from his past will return to him and finally come to a Gatsby party ,and will put an end to Gatsby's emptiness.

When I first started reading The Great Gatsby, I thought it would be another boring book. I thought it would be a slow pace book that would change into different point of views between Nick Carroway and Gatsby. After I read the first two chapters the book began to get a bit more interesting, once Gatsby began to be more in the book. The thing that challeneges me the most is the long sentences and the difficult words that I do not understand. Also, by the lines being so long, I get easily distracted and don't understand what I am reading. I like that the book deals with the roaring twenties, which is a time that I never really knew about. The thing I dislike about the book is that the book is moving so slow into progressing into giving full certain details on certain people. My prediction is that Nick and Gatsby become great friends but something happens to Gatsby that break them apart.

The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald has interest me from the first time we started reading it. Although Nick Carraway has proven to be a unreliable narrator, his telling of this story has become very intriguing and anticipating. The most challenging part for me about this story is the vocabulary, not just the vocabulary that we have been focusing on but the words that I just so happen to come across while reading. One other thing that I have trouble with in this book is keeping full focus while I reading. The thing that I like most about this book is that it always keeps you wondering what’s going to happen next, from the time Tom the Hulking former Yale football player was introduced to the time Nick meets Gatsby with knowing his name. I think this book will continue to get better and better. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
ReplyDeleteMy first impression of The Great Gatsby is sensing how oblivious the narrator, Nick Carroway,is to his own hipocracy. I also notice how often the charachters drink, party, and bicker. It seems like a reality show. But it does seem very interesting and exiting to read.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first started reading The Great Gatsby I was not interested at all, and it was kind of disappointing. My sister and mother told me that it was a very good book, so I was expecting to be drawn in on the first page, and I wasn't. But as i continue to read and get deeper in to the plot I start to like the book more and more. Know I'm eager to keep reading
ReplyDeletesome challenges that I have faced while reading the book is the vocabulary. It is very hard, before reading this book, I was not use to reading books with such a profound use of words. But thanks to those vocabulary test we take each week. The reading is starting to become a lot easier
I predict that Gatsby will die, and Daisy will get sick of toms behavior and leave him. Toms mistress will get dumped by her husband as well. Also nick will continue to be a hypocrite and smuggle.

My first impressions of The Great Gatsby were very surprising. I thought that the book would be boring and not hold my attetion but it is very good. It has a wide range of vocabulary that I'm not used to but other than that I am having no difficulties with the reading. I like the characters because they feel realisitc and are going through normal everyday problems, well for a wealthy person.
ReplyDeleteI think that Daisy will stay with Tom but she will threaten him with her leaving, if he doesn't stop cheating on her or abusing her. I think that Nick might grow very close to Jay Gatsby and that Gatsby will die in the end.
My first impression of the novel The Great Gatsby was that it was very interesting. It drags you into the story almost immediately. I read book in 9th grade as well, but I didn't understand any of it, so I kind of expected it to be the same way this time. I'm getting a better comprehension of the story and its only the 3rd chapter. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the book.
ReplyDeleteI think that Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway will become really good friends. Daisy and Tom Buchanan will separate and something will happen to Tom.

Since this is my second time reading it I already have some insist on what the book is about ,but it likes I’m understanding what is actually happening in the book better now. This is because I’m actually taking my time and trying to understand what is occurring in the book. The book is more complex and deep then I remember it being. This is so by the word choice from F. Scott Fitzgerald is much more complex then I’m use to reading. It’s making me use my prior knowledge of taking the book sentence by sentence to grasp what’s happening in the book. The book all together I like because it appeals to me in a since that I enjoy reading books with drama and a mystery in it. However, there are few things I dislike such as his wording confuses me sometimes as well as his complex language.

My first impression of the novel , The Great Gatsby was that it was rather slow ... meaning it wasnt alot happening and just meaningless talking and the meeting of characters. The book is very complex as far as the word usage , but overall I like this book and im excited about reading it.
ReplyDeleteI beileve that Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway will establish a friendship and Daisy and Tom Buchanan will get an divorce and Daisy will meet another man.

ReplyDeleteMy first impression on F Scott Gerald's "The Great Gastby" was that it was going to be a long boring book, but after reading the first few chapters the book was very interesting, about how the characters developed as the story continues.
ReplyDeleteThis book isn't really as complex as I thought it would be, even through the diction of the author's words was kind of tricky.
I also like how this book grab the readers attention, verus other books were it was interesting, but it can put you to sleep. An example, of that would be Toni Morrison's " Beloved", it was a very interesting story, but the changes from past-tense to present-tense was kind of strange, and because of this it was hard to follow the story.
I predict that due to Tom's behavior Daisy will get an divorce. Also Nick and Jay Gastby will become good friends.

My first impressions about The Great Gatsby was that the boo was going to be extremely boring and i will find no interest in reading this book. But as I continued to read the book i realized that this book was becoming more and more interesting as I read. This book is a challenge word wise but other than that I feel like this is going to be a very wonderful book in the end.
ReplyDeleteI think that Nick and Gatsby are going to become really good friends something like best friends, and Daisy is going to get sick and tired of Toms careless attitude and file a divorce towards him.
My first impressions of The Great Gatsby were that it would be pretty boring and that there would be a lot of unanswered questions. After we started reading, I figured out that the story is actually quite interesting. The thing that challenges me the most is all the figurative language that Nick uses through the whole book. I like the fact that the story is in first person because it gives us an insight into Nick's mind. At the end of the story, I think that J. Gatsby and Nick will become good friends and Gatsby might leave West Egg.

My first impression of the book was that it was going to be a complicated piece of literature. I knew I was going to have to pay ver close attention to the figurative language and literary devices. I like everything about the book. It's a great story an it is told vey well. I won't predict what happens because I already know. :P

When I first read "The Great Gatsby", I was not interested in the book. Previous 11th graders told me that the book was boring and very difficult to understand. When I picked up the book and started to read the book I was amazed that the book was resplendent. It had a great start and kept the readers attention. The book has hidden jokes and symbols that help you to understand the story better. The book isn't as complex as I thought it would be.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Gatsby and Nick relationship will blossom into a very important and great relationship to the story.

I thought The Great Gastby was going to be a boring book about the 20's, but it turned out to be very interesting. The first chapter I didnt like to much, but going into the second chapter the book began to get better and better. Its fasinating to see how the wealthy people of that time lived and how much both the wealthy and middle class partied. I am not a big fan of Nick, but I am starting to get used to him. I anxious to learn more about Gastby and the truth about why he continues to through such big parties.
