Last week we learned that memorizing a word doesn't necessarily mean you've learned it. In a brief response, please describe your experience with the vocabulary words this week. Were than any words you struggled with? Or any words you thought you knew but discovered you needed a deeper understanding of them?
Also, please provide an example of a new word you learned last week and how you think you might use it in your own writing.
As always, your comment is due by Friday (Sept. 25th) at 5pm.

My experience with the vocabulary words week last was more so a review, because i knew a lot of them from previous experience. Furthermore, I fully prepared weeks before for the original vocabulary test.
ReplyDeleteA new word I learned last week is "carpe diem" which means seize the day. This is an idea I strongly believe in so it will become a theme presented in some of my future writings.
My experience with the vocabulary words from last week was very different than the one of my fellow classmate Rashad. I don't believe I studied to my best of my abilities even though a developed a basic understanding of the principles and the literary devices that were adressed with the vocabulary cards. This wwek I decided to change this by studying and actually applying more time into learning these words' meaning and applications.
ReplyDeleteOne word that I learned was aphorism, although I understood the concept for which word stood for, during the quizzes I could never remember the word. As far as this week the word that stuck out the most is the words dramatic irony. This stood out because I had seen the concept used so many times before in movies and in television but I never knew there was an word exact for it. I plan on using this word as an reference tool when I have to write about not only contemporary pieces that use this but also classics who coined literary device.
The vocabulary learned last weak were fairly easy; since I learned them in 10th grade in Mike the Poet's class.I really didn't have a struggle with the words since they were previously learned, they were like a refresher to the mind. The carpe diem is goin to be something I will start to use in much more of my writing, especially in poems. Carpe diem is a very creative word which will be my daily motto to seize the day.

Well, I didn’t really have a problem with the vocabulary words because I was familiar with them either from Mike’s poetry class or my prior reading. The only thing I had a problem with was studying the words in a manner which they would be on the test. The literary devices on the sheet will assist me in my writing endeavors because they basically open my mind up to different forms and styles of stronger writing. The vocabulary is helping me to shorten my sentences but at the same time strengthen my writing.
ReplyDeleteMy experience with the vocabulary words were very abnormal. I understood the words but I just couldnt memorize then. Thats why i had to retake the test. I finally understood the words after you throughly explained the words and gave examples. I then went back and reviewed the words and fianally started to memorized the words and i passed the test with flying colors.

ReplyDeleteMy experience with the vocabulary words were easy, but its hard for me to get to learn them and study them, because I am still in summer mode which I still need to get out of. Even when I studied for the second time I still was not able to learn the words, so I still struggled a little bit. Most of the words that I had trouble with were aphorism, allusion, ambiguity, and assonance, but everything else I understood. I need a better understanding on carpe diem, because I still do not understand that word. A new word that I learned last week is anachronism because it could give me ideas on my creative writing.

My experience with the vocabulary words from last week didn't give me a challenge because I am familiar with the words from Mike the poets class. The challenge that I had was studying the words in a different way and really understanding the meaning of the words. I changed my study habits and made them stronger, by stronger I mean that I now take the time to understand the meaning of the word rather than memorizing the word and not know what the word means after I have taken the test. I like learning new words that mean something so simple but make you look intelligent. I like to expand my vocabulary with these types of literary devices. The examples that you, Ms.Kavanagh, have shown us was a great help to my understanding and help my mind to know the concept of the word. The only word that i couldn't pronounce was the word "Colloquial" and was astonished of what it meant. In my writings i believe i would be more fond of the word "Antithesis", because in books there are a lot of antithesis and i would be able to prove that with that with evidence and be able to explain it in detail.

The vocabulary from last week should've been review for me, but I discovered that some of the words I had learned last year and the year before I didn't really know. I had memorized them just to get through the vocabulary test and pop quizzes, but I dont think I ever tried to actually learn them. The first quiz we had I did terrible on and I honestly will say that I definitly could've studied harder and longer for it. My second time taking the quiz i did much better. Although I could not think of the exact word I was able to write the definition of the word I was trying to think of, which showed that I at least knew what word the quotes where examples of. For the next vocabulary quiz I am definitly planning on studying hard so that instead of writing down the definition of the words I can write the actual word.
ReplyDeleteI thought the vocabulary from last week had some interesting words I had never seen before; I had never heard of an aphorism, but now if some random guy comes up to me and is like “That build board is an aphorism”, I can say “It sure is buddy” The main way I studied, was by making flashcards, and that really helped me a lot. I personally thought the first test, where we just gave the definition was easier, then the second one. Oh and as for as the new words I’m trying to use examples from TV shows or movies I like. Which is why half my examples were from the Simpsons Movie.

The vocabulary words from last week were basically a review from last year, but i had not studied. I thought I already knew the words so theres no need for me to even study for the test and in the end failed. If I had reviwed the words like i should have in the first place I would have gotten a good grade like I did the second time around. I didnt struggle with any of the words, because Ms.Hamilton went over them last year. But I did not remember all of them or there definition. I thought I knew what an antithesis is but realized that I didnt. A new word I learned was denouement, and thats a word i believe i can use in my own writing to enhance my essays.

The vocabulary words were interesting and I learned a lot. However, It was hard for me to learn all the words, even though I was familiar with a few. a new word I learned was denotation, I have seen this word many times and never knew the definition. I have studied hard for the last four days and I'm sure that i will get a good grade on the test, friday.

The vocabulary was not that hard to understand after you study them and take the time to learn them. This was not what I did, so the understanding of the words were not clear to me during the time of the quizzes.
ReplyDeleteThe one word that stood out to me the most was "Abstract". It describes me, I dont really belong to anything in particular.
The word "comdey" surprised me, I didn't know that it had a meaning in the literary sense. I mean, It is a word, but I discovered a deeper meaning.

My experience with the vocabulary words last week were surprisingly easy. I thought I would have a harder time learning the words and being able to identify them by their examples. I found it easier for me to recognize the words by creating simpler definitions and making my own examples. One word I particularly struggled with was "assonance". I kept getting it confused with alliteration. Although I knew what alliteration was I still found myself second guessing my answers because I had not grasped the definition of "assonance."
ReplyDeleteI would use "antithesis" in my writing. I've always liked when I read lines such as, "the best of times, the worst of times" & I love him but I hate him." I've always found it interesting how it can contrast a thought but you still understand what it's saying.

The words from last week also gave me a slight hard time. Like Tellis, i was familiar with alot of the words but the actual definitions had me confused. I could have studied harder the first time we took the test, but i was overally confident that I knew the words. Im glad that I passed the secont time. A new word I learned was alliteration. That word had me so confused on the test.

ReplyDeleteMy expierence witht he vocabulary words, was diffiult because, I've only heard of a few of the words. Also I thought I memorized the meaning an examples but it all left my mind. I didn't have any problems with the words, just a few I thought I knew and I didn't.
ReplyDeleteANTAGONIST is the word I had a problem with. I believed I knew it but when it came to the test i completely forgot.I would you use Allusion in my writing because I like the way it expresses certian mood in sentences.

The vocabulary from last week was very interesting, and its not like they were hard. like anaiya said, they were words I learned a few years back and when it comes to a test im so used to memorizing of the top of my head, I never actually took the time out to break down the word and learn it. Im also glad because I love learning new words and it gave me a chance to stimulate my mind. But since I wasnt there for the 1st test n I was only there for the 2nd, I wasnt really confident or prepared enough to even pull out an awsome grade. The words I didnt really struggle with, I actually learned a few new words. The word that actually stuck out to me was aphorism because I never heard of it and I can use it in my essay writings.
ReplyDeletemy experiences with the vocabulary words last week were, easy and difficult. I found them to be easy because some of them i were familiar with and some of them i had no idea about. After haven studied for the test i felt like i had the confidence to pass with easy. unfortunately that was not the case. This left me a little puzzled by why i didn't do so well. I know i studied for an increasing amount of time. But i guess that just wasn't enough. I now know that I have to work even more for my next quiz.

My experience with the vocabulary words was fairly easy. I knew most of the words because i learned them in the ninth and tenth grade. If I just study and review the words I will be able to fully understand the word and its meaning. Once I study i feel very confident that I can pass the vocabulary tests.
ReplyDeleteA new word that I have learned (and grown to love), is anachronism. I love the idea of something being out of place according to the time period. It's actually quite hilarious to me. I like to make up my own anachronisms because it helps me remember the definition and I will always have an example ready in case I'm asked about anachronisms.
The words fom this week weren't hard like the first set, mainly because I had an idea of what most of the word meant. Such as complication, conflict, and a few others. Eventhough the words were easier then the first week I still had an issue with truly grasping the meaning of the words. Such as "complication" I believed it meant to have an issue and then somthing turns it and makes it worse. Come to find out its basically understanding the conflict.
ReplyDeleteI will use "allusions" in my writing because when I speak I seem to always allute to something. Such as when I allute to Katt Williams "It's Pimpin Pimpin" by saying " Eee-verr-ee-thang Eee-verr-ee-thang..."
My experience with the vocabulary words this week was that they weren't as hard to understand as the other words because I already knew what most of the words meant. I don't think I'll remember what a dramatic monologue is but other than that I might do well on the test. A term I learned last week was colloquial expression but I won't use this in my writing. I don't think that colloquial expressions are appropriate for expressing thoughts in an environment for education.

ReplyDeleteThe words that I studied last week, was kinda of a challenge, due to the fact I didnt have any type of prior knowlegde except for the words Abstract, Climax, characterization, and antagonist, also I feel didn't use as much time as I should studying the words. While reading the David Kemp article, didnt know any of the Vocabulary words that was in bold, so it was somewhat difficult to understand.Until I looked up some words such as : "tenement", "Credential", and "Solipistic".
ReplyDeleteI would use vocabulary words such as "Intimation", and "tenement", as words I would use in poems. For example, in a poem I written recently called "Diamond". I uses the words "tenement" and "Intimation", in a line of the poem.
"Diamonds are forever, because they're alive, people wear it in their mouths then try to get high, but not trying to taste, the bloody history of Africa's arms race, but we all face the american dream, you try to buy a big house, sittin sideways, but dont you ever think about the children's lives in stake?, sitting in tenements on poor medical care, It's a shame that the United States government dont care, this is a Intimation of Africa's dying salvation , can't you see all the lives that were taken?"
In the near future I'll use the vocabulary words, I have learned in class to use in poems such as the example I gave above.

I'm not a great student when it comes to studying and memorizing although I have an great memory. My experience with the vocab words were a bit challegening, but it was a lesson because I have learned to study ahead of time and as well be more productive with more effiecent ways to study before quiz.
ReplyDeleteOne example of a word was denoument , i didnt understand nor hear the word ever before taking AP, I would use it in an essay to word my arguements better and as well make the text more of an interesting read.

Honestly, when it comes to memorization Im not the greatest. The vocabulary from last week wasn't really that complicated. I just didnt take enough time out to study. This weeks vocabulary was much easier in my opinion because the words were easier to comprehend, and understand. There were a few words I though I knew but had to actually re-read the definition to understand it.
ReplyDeleteThe word that stuck out to me the most was dramatic irony. When I watch movies, and television theres always that one part in there when a character might do something, and the audience knows whats going on, but the other charactes may not.
I might use that word in my own writing when trying to explain a literary point in an essay, or even in everyday life.

There were not many words that I struggled with because I had Mike the Poet's 4th period class last year, so a lot of the words are just review. However, I did come to have a deeper understanding for many of the words, and I learned to use them in examples.
ReplyDeleteI discover that I use aphorisms a lot in my everyday life. I'm very observant, and often I state the things I observe in a poetic way.

My experience with the vocabulary this week was much easier than last weeks vocabulasy. I had a wonderful understanding of the words. Last week the vocab was much more difficult because some of the words I never seen before and couldnw't grasp the definition of the words. This week I was very familiar with the words because in the past I have used these words.
ReplyDeleteI will began to use our vocabulary word "allusion" in my writing because I allude to different works in my writing.
My experience with the words was hard these words were words I have seen but never really payed attention to. As far as these words go the definition is not necessarily the answer , I myself need to remember to find examples of the words to further my understanding.Differiating between alliteration, assonance , and consonance.
ReplyDeleteI learned about colloquial expressions I often write with colloquial expressions so I need to learn when to use that form of vocabulary.
My experience with the new vocabulary words was more of a shock. Like I studied and everything for the test, but now I wished that I would have listened to my mother a bit more. When I got home I asked her to help me study for the test and the first thing that she told me about the test was "what was everything that the teacher told you about the test?" Then after i explained it to her, she told me to write the word and the definition, when I was done to provide 3 examples for all of them. When she told me that I was being defiant, so I didn't do it. But while taking the test, I wish that I did have at least some examples i my mind of what each word would be. Also, another hard part about the test for me, was I kept getting a few of the words confused, because they had similar definitions.
ReplyDeleteI learned about carpe diems, which means to seize the day. I think that I will always remember this phrase because I can connect with the definition and the pronunciation is cool too. I will use carpe diem in my future with my writings, to seize the day, and get my homework done on time

Personally I had never seen most of the words on our vocabulary packet. I feel that they are difficult but that's only because I haven't really spent much time studying them. Other than that if I were to apply myself I think I would be solid but the words that have stayed in my mind are the words that I think I can relate with. My favorite word is carpe diam because I do think that we should seize the day. As the future of our country we should try to do everything we wanted to do in the present but in a productive way that helps society. I also know for a fact that I've done poorly in our vocab test because I havent yet found a technique in which all the words can stay in my mind but hopefully I can come up with one pretty soon. :)
