  1. I felt that Obama's speech was inspiring because it validated the fact that we are the future and that we can do anything we set our minds to do; but it is up to us to make our dreams come. During the speech liked how he spread the responsibility for a child's education to the students, parents, and child themselves. This is important because it takes a village to raise a child and everyone in the child's community plays a special part in the development of the child into an adult. Another part of the speech I liked is how established himself as a President just like ordinary people by using an example of him getting up at 4:30 in order to get his education because that was the only time his mother could teach him. This shows that the president uses the universal human experience in the theme of education is important to daily life, as a theme in his speech.

  2. I agree with DaVeon 100% President Obamas speech was very inspiring. It showed us that the same things were going through in highschool, an the same challanges we think we face as student and young adults our president has faced and come out on top. When President Obama stated that where you are now is not where you will end up struck me the most. Because as teens we just focus on the mistakes and choices that we make today and think that its going to ruin our lives not thinkingt that we have our whole lives in front of us and this is just the begining. Were like a fresh flower we have yet to blossum. Also when the President stated there is no excuse for not trying that also struck me. At times we tend to give up instead of sticking it out, one mishap or failure and were done instend of seeing what might have come out of the situation if we had just stuck it out. These things mean something to me and in different ways have impacted my life and will impact my future.

  3. I think Obama's speech was very inspiring. Even just reading it you could see how much he really cares about the students in America.I loved how instead of speaking to the public in general he was focusing on the students. The fact he was using some of his past experiences to relate to us helped to let us know that he has been where we are now and that if he was able to make it through school, even after making bad choices and growing up in a broken home, we can too. He let us know that he believes in us and that if we put our minds to it we can do anything. When Obama said that some of the most successfull people in America "succeeded because they understand that you cant let your failures define you" it really stuck with me because I often let my past failures and mistakes define who I am as person. It made me think that if I just take the time to learn from my mistakes I can achieve more than I could ever imagine. I am planning on remembering and using this quote because I believe that it can help me not only succeed in getting my education, but help me succeed in whatever i try to do. I was able to take so much from Obama's speech and it help to get me motivated for school and make a difference in my life. I hope others who have read or heard it were able to learn as much from him as I did and were able to use it some how to change something in their own lives.

  4. "...people succeeded because they understood that you can't let your failures define you -- you have to let your failures teach you. You have to let them show you what to do differently the next time"

"No one's born being good at all things. You become good at things through hard work."

These are probaly my favorite parts of the speech, becuase so often when people mess up they feel discouraged. I think the president made a good point about learing from mistakes, and failures, becuase I personally feel like we as a culture are driven by sucess, but many see it as a one-shot thing. For example if someone starts a buisness and it fails, very few people would try again. In their minds they would see failure as a sign to move on, but Pres. Obama is saying no, you need to take your failure, learn from it, and continue our dream. So I think this was a really excellent speech, and the essential thing that I got out of it was dont give up.

  5. "Where you are right now doesn't have to determine where you'll end up. No one's written your destiny for you."

"Asking for help isn't a sign of weakness, it's a sign of strength. It shows you have the courage to admit when you don't know something, and to learn something new."

Obama's speech told me that no matter where you live or where you come from it can not stop you from learning as much information as you can. The quotes I picked means that just because of where you come from or how poor you are or how hard your past was does not mean you shouldn't try. Secondly, by asking for help does not show how dumb or stupid you are. It just shows that you did not understand the material. Asking for help lets the teacher or anyone else know that you need them to give more examples or give more of an explanation on the lessen that was taught. If you do not ask for help then you are cheating yourself on learning something new. By not letting yourself ask for help, your teacher will never be able to help you. Basically, your path is not already chosen for you. You choose your own path by the choices you make and the education you get from learning at school. Today, children in Los Angeles feel that education is less important then their real problems. They feel that their destiny is already set out for them and they can't do a thing to change it. This speech affected me by showing me that the choices I make now affects my future ahead of me. It makes me take my education more seriously and I now know that I should not take it for granted.

  6. "Don't be afraid to ask questions. Don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. I do that every day. Asking for help isn't a sign of weakness, it's a sign of strength because it shows you have the courage to admit when you don't know something, and that then allows you to learn something new".

"No one's born being good at all things. You become good at things through hard work."

Obama's speech is inspiring and has changed me point of view on how i should view myself. the first quote that picked is going to help me better myself as a human-being. I am the type of person who thinks that my questions are dumb and that people will judge me. obama brings up a great point "Asking for help isn't a sign of weakness, it's a sign of strength because it shows you have the courage to admit when you don't know something, and that then allows you to learn something new." this has made me to believe in myself and to not be afraid of what other people think. To always ask, if i don't know what's going on because if i don't ask i look dumber because i don't know the answer. In me my second quote i use to think people were born intelligent until my second semester of my freshmen year i changed my life around and got a 3.3. i had never in my life got good grades but something click and from that day on i believed in myself that i could accomplish anything if i just focus and do my work. Obama shows that he really cares for children all around the world and wants us to give 100% of our dedication to anything that we want to succeed in, because you only get one life so give it your all and live life without as many as regrets as possible.

  7. "she didn't have the money to send me where all the American kids went to school, but she thought it was important for me to keep up with an American education. So she decided to teach me extra lessons herself, Monday through Friday. But because she had to go to work, the only time she could do it was at 4:30 in the morning."

above all other comments, this excerpt struck me the most because it shows the dedication of a parent to her child. If it weren't for those 4:30 mornings, Obama wouldn't be, well "Obama". He wouldn't be looked upon as "the american dream" and we most likely wouldn't have had the chance to experience a "black/white" president in out lifetimes. its just the little things that don't even get a second thought that later become the most important. and it also shows us how important education is. I don't know if anyone has realized this, but Obama is the only president to be an actual regular person that didn't have influence from birth and wasn't afraid to actually form into the community and get "down and dirty" with not only the adults, but the youth.

"There is no excuse for not trying."
This quote got to me because everybody tells it to us but usually its just a filler in their conversation because they have nothing else to say. With Obama, i can sense that he has an actual care for everyone, individually. Overall, the speech got to me because it was real. Im tired of all the donky crap they feed us in schools about how they care and their actions prove different. Obama Is Making A Change. this i appreciate.

  8. Obama's speech was very very powerful to me. I agree with everyone who has blogged before me. Obama stated that he has made speeches about our parents, teachers, and government making sure we have a great education, but now its time for us to take responsibility for our own education. This is our 11th grade year and I have never been this serious about my education before. Not only did Obama's speech give me potivation but it made me realize how important my education is. A lot of times I try to get good grades to please my parents, but now I want the good grades to better myself.

"No one's born being good at all things. You become good at things through hard work."

Along with Nayali, this quote touched me. Math has never been my subject but it seems that many of my friends always had good grades in this subject. Know matter how hard I tried I could never have the grade i wanted in that class. This quote made me realize that if I just keep on trying and working hard, I will begin to see the grade I want.

Although I may not have had the grades I wanted in 10th and 11th grade, it doesnt define who I am. This is my year to shine and show everyone the hard working Khalia.

Thanks to Obama I have a new look at school

  9. I felt that Obama's speech was touching, inspiring, and from the heart. I really enjoyed Obama's speech because he specifially directed his speech towards the children, teens, and young adults; the future of America. One of my favorite quotes in his speech was "Where you are right now doesn't have to determine where you'll end up". This quote really touched me because it inspired me to try harder and set goals so i don't have to end up where i started. Another of my favorite quotes is "...you can't let your failures define you - you have to let them teach you". This quote touched be because in the past i let my failures define me, but now after hearing his speech again i don't let me failures define me, i actually learn from them and improve on them for future refrences. Obama's speech was very meaningful and sincere, i couldn't imagine anyone not being inspired from it.

  10. "But at the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, the best schools in the world -- and none of it will make a difference, none of it will matter unless all of you fulfill your responsibilities, unless you show up to those schools, unless you pay attention to those teachers, unless you listen to your parents and grandparents and other adults and put in the hard work it takes to succeed"

"Don't be afraid to ask questions. Don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. I do that every day. Asking for help isn't a sign of weakness, it's a sign of strength because it shows you have the courage to admit when you don't know something"

I choose both of these quotes because they inspired me. I believe 100% everything that Obama said. It taught me that even if im not good an subject in school that i should try and try again until I become better in it. I agree with everyone who responded before i did. Standing up for our own education is whats best for us, not letting anyone tell us that we cant learn this or that but telling ourself that we can do this we can do that, and that we can make our goals to meet our future plans now

  11. "No one's born being good at all things. You become good at things through hard work."

This quote stuck out to me because I agree with him. I believe that no one is born knowing how to read and write, or spell. Those are all things that we gradually learn throughout life, that we can hopefully become good at. I like that he put that into his speech because im sure he inspired alot of young kids.

"Asking for help isn't a sign of weakness, it's a sign of strength. It shows you have the courage to admit when you don't know something, and to learn something new."

I chose this quote because I can relate to it. Normally I might be shy, or embarassed to ask "dumb" questions, but as I grow up I realize that no question is a dumb question. All questions if not most have an answer. He encouraged me to actually start asking more questions. I also like how he made the point to say that it doesn't show a sign of weaknes. Barack Obama is truly an insparation to people everywhere.

  12. "Maybe you could be a great writer -- maybe even good enough to write a book or articles in a newspaper -- but you might not know it until you write that English paper -- that English class paper that's assigned to you. Maybe you could be an innovator or an inventor -- maybe even good enough to come up with the next iPhone or the new medicine or vaccine -- but you might not know it until you do your project for your science class. Maybe you could be a mayor or a senator or a Supreme Court justice -- but you might not know that until you join student government or the debate team."

I really liked this part of the speech because it was something that i could relate to. I would love to be a writer when i get older and make a career out of it, but I know that i can't become a writer with out the neccessary writing and language skills. I took AP English Lit. mostly for this reason. I want to acheive that goal and President Obama clearly stated that the only way for me to acheive my goal is for me to work hard for it. Nothing is given to you, especially if what you want is hard to get.

"I get it. I know what it's like. My father left my family when I was two years old, and I was raised by a single mom who had to work and who struggled at times to pay the bills and wasn't always able to give us the things that other kids had. There were times when I missed having a father in my life. There were times when I was lonely and I felt like I didn't fit in.
So I wasn't always as focused as I should have been on school, and I did some things I'm not proud of, and I got in more trouble than I should have. And my life could have easily taken a turn for the worse."

This part in speech struck me as well. I know many people in my generation grew up with no father or even a mother in their life. I know I'm one of them. Most teens in this position don't apply themselves in life and just give up. They get involved in gangs to get that sense of family or find some person or substance to make them feel good and validadted as a person. I didn't. I have always tried to be the best person i could be and succeed in life. President Obama made mistakes in his life but it took him awhile before he got focused on what was important to him. I know what I want out of life already and I'm willing to do the work to acheive my goals in life. I know i have to stay focused and that I can't become distracted by people or substances that will lead me to failure. I want to be a better person than my parents and I feel that was the main message of Obama's speech. Do the best you can and strive to be better than your so-called role models, because if you stay focused you can accomplish anything.

  13. I feel as though President Obamas speech hit right on the money. He talked about a lot of key things that I myself or a friend have encountered.

"No one's born being good at all things. You become good at things through hard work."

This statement really inspired me to work harder and to try my best at everything I do because like he said, no one is born being good at all things. If I really want to be the best musician that I can be. I'm going to have to work as hard as I can. I'm not going to get to be the best by sitting around all day. I need to work hard and not give up and one day I will be what I aspire to be.

"Where you are right now doesn't have to determine where you'll end up. No one's written your destiny for you, because here in America, you write your own destiny. You make your own future."

This statement is just a backup for me. For everyone that says, "You'll never be ..." or, "You can't do that because the odds are against you." This is my backup. This is to prove everyone wrong. I can be whatever I want to be and no body can change that. As long as I stay focused I can accomplish all of my goals and more.

  16. FIST AND FORE MOST, this is probably the most inspirational speech i ever read ...

The quote that i would like to choose is short but is to the point

"You cant let your failures define you--you have to let your failures teach you."

Obama is basically saying you may make mistake here and there or u may even mess up complete. But don't let those mistakes become your identity. Learn from them and adjust them for the better

  17. President Barack Obama's speech was very powerful and inspiring to me. It made me relate in ways that made me think he was talking directly to me about my own problems. He let you know that he understands you and he understands the problems you face. President Obama said:

"Now I know it's not always easy to do well in school. I know a lot of you have challenges in your lives right now that can make it hard to focus on your schoolwork."

This quote stood out to me because there has been many times when I have seriously thought about giving up. Last year I encountered many obstacles in my life that affected me greatly and I had lost all hope of succeeding in life. I felt as if everything was pointless and no matter how hard I tried nothing good would ever come out of it. After the President said this he went on and said, " I get it." He not only told me he understood, he went on to share his personal experiences. I felt as if the President was in my situation and that has given me even more motivation because look how far he's come.

" I know that sometimes you get the sense from TV that you can be rich and successful without any hard work--that your ticket to success is through rapping or basketball or being a reality TV star, when chances are you're not going to be any of those things. But the truth is, being successful is hard."

This quote also stood out to me because Prseident Obama is basically saying this American Dream we all talk about is truly just a dream. You can never reach success if you don't strive for it, if you don't work harder than you've ever worked before. Nothing in life is handed to you, they're earned.

  18. "Maybe you could be a great writer -- maybe even good enough to write a book or articles in a newspaper. "No one's born being good at all things. You become good at things through hard work."

I like this part as well, because as i like to write poems, when I started to write I keep practicing, working hard at it,I got better and better, Hopefully I can encourage other young students to start writing.

"I get it. I know what it's like. Obama showed that nothing is impossible, he went from a boy that was raised by his mom in raised in a poor negative influenced envoirnment to the white house becoming the first african american to running the United States Of America. As a young student ,his speech encouraged me to keep writing with hopes of becoming poet/actor/activist.

  19. To me, the speech in its entirety was excellent, I understood what he was saying and i could relate. It painted a portrait of my life and i felt as if he understood the struggles of everyday reality and not just talking being a total waste of time.

the two peices of text that stood out to me where :

"And this isn't just important for your own life and your own future. What you make of your education will decide nothing less than the future of this country. The future of America depends on you. What you're learning in school today will determine whether we as a nation can meet our greatest challenges in the future"

"I get it. I know what it's like. My father left my family when I was two years old, and I was raised by a single mom who had to work and who struggled at times to pay the bills and wasn't always able to give us the things that other kids had. There were times when I missed having a father in my life. There were times when I was lonely and I felt like I didn't fit in."

In those quotes alone he connected with my life. I know what its like not to come from a picture perfect family , or to just have everything laid out for me. I know what its like when you have to get uo at 5am everyday to go to your grandmothers house so you can go to school because your mom has to be at work at a certain time and because of that isnt able to take you to school. I felt his struggle and pain with not having a father around ,my parents divorced when i was in my freshman year os high school and it was very for me to cope with.So for Obama to reveal such a intimate detail like that about his personal life it made me want to achieve everything ive ever dreamed of and know its possible to do so, now i know that sometimes we all have to go thru dark situations just to get where we need to be and for that , it made my edcuation that much more important than what it already was.

  20. "even when your're struggling, even when your're discouraged, and you feel like other people have given up on you, dont ever give up on yourself, because when you give up on yourself, you give up on your country."

I like this quote because when I start to struggle and I get really discouraged I alaways feel the need to give up on myself. But then I have to realize if I want to be successful in life, and live my american dream. I have to push myself and go beyond 100% and dont let what others say get me down, because I kno I can do better.

"Asking for help isnt a sign of weakness, its asign of strength because it shows you have the courage to admit when you dont know something, and then that allows you to learn something new."

i chose this second quote because it also relates to me, when im in the classroom i get shy and I always have a question to ask or something I want to say. But at the same time I think someone is going to laugh or think its stupid, so i just sit back quietly. Now after reading his speech he encouraged to ask questions and taught me that its not a sign of weakness its a sign of strength and i thank him for that.

  21. I LOVED Obama's speech and i felt it to be very inspirational towards me to strive to do better than I have been doing. I felt personally impacted by his words because he describes situations that are very similar to mine and hit me on an emotional level. This speech was not just some speech where he said the clique 'stay in school just because you are supposed to' and I liked that fact, he really connected with people on a personal level, and I respect that.

The two most influential parts of Obama's speech were:

"Every single one of you has something that you're good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is."

"My father left my family when I was two years old, and I was raised by a single mom who had to work and who struggled at times to pay the bills and wasn't always able to give us the things that other kids had. There were times when I missed having a father in my life. There were times when I was lonely and I felt like I didn't fit in. So I wasn't always as focused as I should have been on school, and I did some things I'm not proud of, and I got in more trouble than I should have. And my life could have easily taken a turn for the worse."

In these two quotes he portrays my life story. I know what it is like to not know what your purpose here is or wonder why I cannot be given things that others kids can from their parents. I come from a single parents, as well as Obama, and I love my mom to death because I know that she is going through a lot right now just to get me at this point. I know what it is like to wake up early in the morning to be dropped off at my grandma's house so that I can be at school on time because my mom has to be at work early in the mornings. I can understand where Obama is coming from when he describes the children that miss their dads and get into some trouble that could have been avoided because I was that kid. My dad was my best friend, he was the closest person to me and he left at a very important milestone in my life, at a part when I needed him the most, when I became a freshman in high school. After he left, I had problems trying to cope and I did not care about my life so I started hanging out with people that got me in some trouble outside of school. But, enough about my life story, after reading this speech by Obama, I really do feel like there is hope for me yet in my future and for that I have to say, Obama is a cool guy in my book.

  22. I think the Obama speech was necessary, I appreciate the fact that our president took the time to address a crisis in our country. His speech gave us inspiration in this time that we our going through.

Asking for help isn't a sign of weakness, it's a sign of strength because it shows you have the courage to admit when you don't know something, and that then allows you to learn something new. So find an adult that you trust -- a parent, a grandparent or teacher, a coach or a counselor -- and ask them to help you stay on track to meet your goals.- This part of Obamas speech meant a lot to me. So many people fail or give up because they see asking questions as a sign of weakness or think its uncool to ask questions.

The story of America isn't about people who quit when things got tough. It's about people who kept going, who tried harder, who loved their country too much to do anything less than their best.-This also affects me and lots of teens in general because people now a days give up so easily. I think hearing this from the president may inspire many. It shows that the people of our country didnt make it by giving it but by percevering.

  23. I believe Obama's speech is very truthful because he hit main points that needed to be talked about. Such as, not letting how your life is going affect your education, how you come to school to learn and pay attention to your teachers. It hit home with me because I was able to relate to what he was saying. Not only that but it makes me want to strive to do better.

One of the quotes that struck me was when he said, " You can't drop out of school and just drop into a good job." This reminds me of what my mom would tell me. She stresses on me how much education is important and with her doing so it makes me want to try my hardest. Hearing this from the president, the first african-american president, it hits home. In saying to be able to fullfil my dreams I must stay focused on whats necassary to reach my goals.

The second statement that caught my attention was when he says, "But at the end of the day, the circumstances of your life - what you look like, where you come from, how much money you have, what you've got going on at home - that's no excuse for neglecting your homework or having a bad attitude." This is bascially saying that no matter what happens always do what you have to do to sucessed in life. I truly beleieve that that's how people should look at there life compared to school. Without school you cant have a sucessful future. With this statement it makes me feel like what happens to me should never get in the way of my learning.

  24. I was very inspired by the words of our president’s speech. This speech allowed me to realize how many people in my life is rooting for me to achieve in life. This speech also showed me that the only way to accomplish my goals in life is by me going to school and work very hard. I am very appreciative that I have a president that wants his American children to achieve greatness in life.

"Every single one of you has something you're good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That's the opportunity an education can provide."

This quote is expressing to me that everyone is unique/different in their own way. President Obama is also telling us that we can use all of these techniques and add it to our education. Meaning that we can all still be different but we can still succeed.

"I expect you to put your best effort into everything you do. I expect great things from each of you. So don't let us down - don't let your family or your country or yourself down. Make us all proud. I know you can do it."

This quote is expressing to me that everyone wants us to do well and that starts with us wanting to do well for ourselves. Everyone wants us to try our best no matter when we have our doubts about us not being able to do something.

SO this speech provided me with confidence about how I am going to get through this school year. Every time I have my doubts I am going to refer back to this speech for an inspiration.

I’m tired of all the donkey crap they feed us in schools about how they care and their actions prove different. Obama Is Making A Change. This I appreciate.

  27. I think that president Obama's speech was very well thought out and was very relevant to the youth of America. He didn't use language that was too complex for us to understand which is important and allows kids to fully comprehend what he's talking about. It was a very imspirational speech that probably motivated a lot more students to try harder to get the most out of their education.

"And my mother, she didn't have the money to send me where all the American kids went to school, but she thought it was important for me to keep up with an American education. So she decided to teach me extra lessons herself..."

This quote stood out to me because it shows how much his mother cared about his education. I think that it's important to have a family that pushes you to work hard and strive for success. The quote also struck me because it shows that you don't always need money to obtain a good education; if you're willing to work hard, people might be willing to help you just to see you better yourself.

"Every single one of you has something that you're good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That's the opportunity an education can provide."

This quote struck me because I think it has the potential to spark many interests in students about getting their education. It also is an inspiring message to all youth that they can become important components to the world and that none of them are worthless unless they choose to waste the gifted mind that they were given at birth.

  28. One quote that stood out to me was "But at the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, and the best schools in the world - none of it will matter unless you fulfill you responsibilities". A lot of kids want to blame everyone else for things that happen in their life instead of holding themselves accountable. The president is trying to convey to students that no matter how supportive everyone is of you, it's your responsibility to take ownership of your learning.

"And no matter what you want to do with your life - I guarentee that you'll need an education to do it" Some teenagers have plans to become professional athletes and entertainers. This is an extremely hard task to achieve. Often, this is their only plan. They feel like for the career they are pursuing, an education isn't necessary. They don't think about if the get seriously injured or if things just don't work out. The president is trying to tell everyone that they should have a back up plan and to always place their education first.

  29. I felt that President Obama's speech was very inspiring. I feel that his speech has inpired those students that feel like giving up in school or the ones that would like to drop off. To be someone in life you have to be educated.

A sentence that stood out for me during President Obama's speech was when he said
" No matter what you want to do with your life, I guarantee that you'll need an education to do it."
I completely agree with him because now in this century a person that is not educated is worthless. Besides education enriches us human beings. Being educated is being powerful. Every great leader of our time has been educated. A doctor can't just becme a doctor without any knowledge of medicine. A teacher can not become a teacher without learning what they have to teach. So being educated is the key in life.

The second quote was when President Obama said " No one's written your destiny for you because here in America you write yor own destiny. You make your own future." This quote stood out because it is true no one decides my future nor my destiney. I decide what i want to accomplish in life and who I want to be. It is is inspiring to know that we are able to become who we want in life and that there are no barriers.

  30. "Asking for help isn't a sign of weakness, its s sign of strength because it shows you have the courage to admit when you don't know something, and then that allows you to learn something new."

    - I chose this quote because it relates to me. In class sometimes i wont ask a question because I'm fearful of what people mite say or think about me, however after reading obama's speech,it has motivated me to ask questions in class and not care what other may people think, because asking questions aren't a sign of weakness its a sign of strength.

"No one's born being good at all things. You become good at things through hard work."

    - I chose this quote because this also relates to me. Sometimes in class i get frustrated and discouraged when i don't get a new concept right away. Obamas speech is saying that i shouldn't get angry when i cant pick up something right away because, no one is born good at anything it takes hard work.
