I discovered this week that many of you were intrigued by the concept of Carpe Diem. I decided to give you an opportunity to reflect on a famous poem that illustrates the idea of "seizing the day"
Please find below the poem, "To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time", by Robert Herrick. I have also included a brief clip from the movie Dead Poets Society. Please respond with a metacognitive response, as well as how you think the concept of Carpe Diem could be applied to your life right now.
Remember, you are graded on the quality of your response as well as spelling and grammar, so watch the capitalization. I suggest you type your response in Word and cut
and paste it into the response box to avoid any mistakes.
As always, I am proud of the work you are doing and look forward to our classes this week.
To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time
by Robert Herrick
Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old Time is still a-flying;
And this same flower that smiles today
Tomorrow will be dying.
The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun,
The higher he's a-getting,
The sooner will his race be run,
And nearer he's to setting.
That age is best which is the first,
When youth and blood are warmer;
But being spent, the worse, and worst
Times still succeed the former.
Then be not coy, but use your time,
And while ye may, go marry;
For having lost but once your prime,
You may forever tarry.

The main theme that I got from the poem and the video is that if I want something done, I need to do it now. I really like how line in the poem that says “And this same flower that smiles today
ReplyDeleteTomorrow will be dying” For me that quote is saying taking advantage of any opportunity that I have, because there’s no guarantee that it will always be open. I thought the video was cool, because it made me realize that if I want to have an impact on society, I just can’t wait until I’m older. I have to start doing things now. Overall the main thing I got from the movie and poem is to just don’t waste time, and don’t procrastinate

My metacognitive experience with this poem was very interesting. As I read I thought about some of the themes the author was trying to convey to the reader. The line " And this same flower that smiles today/Tomorrow will be dying" caught my attention the most. It made me think about how one day your life can be wonderful, you can have everything you've ever wanted then all of a sudden it can disappear. Tragedy can strike at any moment and change your perfect life to a nightmare.
ReplyDeleteCarpe Diem can apply to my life right now because I do not take advantages of opportunities I'm given. I tend to procrastinate and sometimes not doing things at all. I find myself missing out on beneficial chances because I'm scared or because nobody else I know is doing it. Everyday I tell myself I'm going to be my own person no matter what others are doing. Unfortanely, I have been at a point in my life where I didn't "seize the day" or live in the moment and I still regret that. These events has taught me that life can end in the matter of seconds and when it does all you will be remembered for is what you did and how much you did. That's why for here on out I am "seizing the day".!

The poem was very interesting to me, though I was confused on whether it was talking about love or sucess, it was still eye opening in both ways. As I was reading the poem, I was asking myself, what does this have to do with "seizing the day"? But then I realized that the very first line was relevant. It was saying, live your life while you can and don't pass anything by. Or it could have been saying, "get the roses before you die". But I chose to take the assumption of a deeper meaning.
ReplyDeleteCarpe Diem is associated with my life today because, I am human. I mean, I dont take the chances that are handed to me on a silver platter. I tend be full on procrastination, the liquid of stupidity. But this year, I promise to not only you, but also, to myself, that I will make sure that this year will be my year for improvement. Besides, I think English 11 will be to easy for me. :)
The clip spoke to me the most. The poem, clip, and word Caore Deim both mean to me do what you want while you can because you never know when your time is up. " gather ye rosebuds while you ye may". To me its also saying take life in while you can. All of our days our numbered we never know when the last day will come, why not "seize the day" and make the best out of our lifes. The clip was also saying life for today and worry about tomowrow when you get there.
ReplyDeleteCarpe Diem "seizing the day" can be applied to my life since i am the type of person that thinks ahead too much instead of just living in the moment. Thinking ahead of the future can bring your future worries to today instead of living for today and enjoying what your life brings you until your time is up.

The poem written by Robert Herrick, from my personal opinion, was written to tell reader to live life as if everyday was your last day, or you never know when you're going to do so it would be in your best interest to make the best of life. The movie clip gave me a better understanding of the movie because the teacher kept repeating carpe diem, cease the day, and some of the student actually thought the picture was whispering to them. This poem in very complex, and has alot of meaning behind it.
ReplyDeleteI try to use carpe diem in my everyday life as much as possible. I want to use carpe diem everyday especially i watch the news because there is always people tragically losing their lives, dying of disease, or just deciding to take their own lives; i don't want that. I want to live my life as long as possible, hopefully reaching my 90's and even my 100's. So I believe carpe diem is very important and people should cease the day as much as possible.

The video and the poem was really inspiring to me, because it made me realize that I should not waste any moment on not reaching for my dreams. I feel that we have limited amount of time to reach for our dreams because as the days go on, that is one less day that will help give us time to reach those dreams. As I read the poem and looked at the video, I kept thinking of the meaning of carpe diem and what it meant to me. Although the video went on, I began to understand clearly of the word carpe diem. I finally realized the deeper meaning of the word, and it was to live life to the fullest.
ReplyDeleteSome of my favorite quotes form the poem is “And this same flower that smiles today/Tomorrow will be dying.” I feel the quote is saying that everyone should do everything to the fullest and don’t settle anything for less. In addition to the video, it made me think that I can’t waist any time on fulfilling my goals, wishes or dreams, because as time goes on I get older and older, farther away from me achieving my dreams. My last quote that I liked was “Gather ye rosebuds while ye may.” I feel that this quote is saying that we should get as much as we can while we are young and still alive. As we get as much as we can this will give us an easier journey into reaching our goals.

This poem was extremely inspiring to me. As I read I was thinking about the thesis of this entire poem. The line that caught my attention is “Then be not coy, but use your time, And while ye may, go marry; For having lost but once your prime, You may forever tarry.” In my opinion the author is telling you to use your time wisely. As teenagers we often loose sight as to what is important in life, because we are distracted very often by the wrong things. The author is trying to convey that if we don’t use our time wisely, it can affect our future, and cause hardships later on down the line. Generally the poem and video gave me insight on how I can better myself by getting things done now, and not procrastinating. We have to learn how to be more willing for the moment, because the future only comes one day at a time.
ReplyDeleteCarpe Diem is applied in my everyday life because I do not take advantage of most opportunities given to me. I really should learn how to “ live in the moment”, or “cease the day”, more often, because worrying about what happens in my future, can affect my future in a negative way. I will learn how to not worry so much about what tomorrow brings, and just worry about what I will achieve today.

ReplyDeleteThe video and the poem was very interesting. it talked about going for your dreams, and not to waste time. Carpe Diem "seizing the day", means to make something of yourself, don't waste life doing stupid things. For example, each day I am making something of myself as a person and a student, I "seized the day", live life as if it was my last day on the earth.
ReplyDelete"Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,

The first few lines of this poem, is saying that take every oppuntunity you get because there is no guarantee, take you would live to see tomarrow.
I made a poem that used the concept of Carpe Diem. It was a dedication poem to a kid that killed by a hit and run driver over the summer.
It's called "If Tomorrow comes...".
"As a matter Of fact, someone got shot 30 seconds prior to that and lived, they continue to live the life of a citizen, because they don't know if someone is going to come and stab them in the neck, so if you did something wrong ,just live your life, because you may never get the chance to make it right, you'll may never know, if the sun will raise tonight."

My first response to the poem when I read it in 9th grade was that it was a pointless abundance of words that didn't relate to me at all. Now I realize that I was overlooking the purpose and meaning of the theme, "Carpe Diem". The theme basically tells me to do everything I have to do in a timely manner and don’t procrastinate or wait for good things to come because tomorrow isn't promised. It has a direct application to my life because I am known for pushing things off to the last possible moment, and although exciting and invigorating it is not a good habit to practice.

When reading the poem I found the image of the "lamp of heaven" in the second stanza interesting. Not much else in the poem really struck.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Robin Williams performance in Dead Poet's Society and viewing this excerpt makes me want to see more
A few weeks ago I looked at life as "the big picture", but a recent experience has show me that if you are always looking at the big picture you miss what's right in front of you. Although living too much in the moment can have its down sides too. The key is to find balance which we, as teenagers, struggle to do everyday.

ReplyDeleteWhen I first read the title of this poem I immediately thought that this poem was about sex. The reason why I came to this conclusion is because of the use of the word virgins and theme of seizing the day; but as I further examined the context of the poem I began to think of the definition of a virgin and the first thing that came to my mind was purity. The next thing that came along with that thought is naivety. In this poem Herrick is encouraging us not to waste our time being naïve focusing on what you are going to do tomorrow when you have not live today. The lines that made the most resounding effect in my mind were the lines. “And this same flower that smiles today/Tomorrow will be dying.” This made me reflect on the various flowers in my life that I am taking for granted, like my family and friends, especially people who I want to get to know better but I have not had the time to have an conversation with them so I can learn things about them and from them. In my life I currently seeing myself slowing fading away and constantly relying on tomorrow to save my today, when tomorrow is not promised. There are so many things I want to do with my life but if I keep not only procrastinating but not taking advantages of the opportunities I have right now to make an impact on my school and community, my life will continue to fade away and will those dreams will become intangible if I do not seize the day.

As I read the poem, I started thinking about how so many chances pass by me all the time and it made me realize how much more I could do with each day than I do currently. I liked this poem better than most other old poems because it wasn't as difficult to understand and it was directly to the point. The poem also showed me that if you wait and hold things off to long, then by the time you want to accept them the opportunities are not available for you anymore. I could use carpe dium in my every day life by seizing more opportunities as they present themselves in my day to day life.

The poem by Robert Herricks was the very compelling to me. The line "And this same flower that smiles today tomorrow will be dying." stood out to me the most because its saying that one day your life is going in the exact place you want it to be and then the next day your life goes down hill. I believe that everybody should take advantage of the moments that are shared with anyone and thank god for letting you live another day because anything can happen.
ReplyDeleteCarpe Diem is sometimes used in my everyday lifestyle. I believe that i don't take advantage of what's given to me. Sometimes I am focused and ready to obtain anything that is given to me and I work very hard to accomplish what's given to me. Other times I procrastinate and give up on myself, which I shouldn't do. At the times that I feel like I am going to give, are the times that I should force myself into doing it. I do not seize the day with love, caring, wisdom and I do not appreciate the moments that are right in front of me. I will continue on practicing Carpe Diem.
The Poem "To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time" by Robert Herrick and the clip "Carpe Diem" was saying that you should take advantage of the day. The line that stood out the most to me was "Then not be coy, but use your time." This basically means don't be shy use your time to your advantage and live everyday like its your last. That was so interesting to me because some times I act shy, and it keeps me away from doing certain activities, this poem is telling me that I shouldn't be shy or act timid. This poem taught me that if there's something you want. You need to go out and get, because you never know what day is your last.

What I liked the most out of the poem was how the poet Robert Herrick tells his audience to live the day as if tomorrow is not promised. I think it is completely true. We should make the most out of the days we do have because we do not know what can happen to us in a blink of an eye. I also loved Robin Williams in the short clip, I like how he's telling his students to live the day and to not be like the alumnis of there school that didn't know what could have been of there lives if they would have done something differently. So now I will never forget to seize the day well atleast I will try not to.

The poem written by Robert Herricks was very intriguingly and it proved to me that we shouldn’t take life for granted, and tomorrow is not always promised to us. The line that caught my attention was “Gather ye rosebuds while ye may.” It stuck out to me the most because it made me realize that life is not promised the next day, and you should take advantage of it now, and live it to your fullest potential because you don’t know when it is your time.
ReplyDeleteCarpe Diem can apply to my life right now because I do not take advantage of challenges and opportunities that are being given in front of me. But now I’m learning that I should, I’m always saying that I’m going to “seize the day” but then at the same time I’m worried about what the future brings instead of accomplishing my task for that day. Now I’m learning to “seize the day” and stop worrying about what the future brings because its all in Gods hands.
My experience with this poem was that as we live each day we are closer to our deaths,we must live everyday as if tomorrow is not promised and things are not always guaranteed .
ReplyDeleteThe part of the poem that stood out to me was "And this same flower that smiles today ,Tomorrow will be dying."
To me , that told me that we may see someone or something one day and the next it is not there. I feel that carpe diem expresses the fact we should be thankful and not think so much of the things that surround us and how it affects our lives.
Carpe Diem is very much needed in my life as of now , and how I can apply it to my everyday life is not expecting so much out of things and not looking so far ahead and being focused on the things that are important now. I know that I emphasize too much on the smaller things and I should allow certain things to go on. So for me now , I am learning to take things day by day and allowing my faith to guide me.

When first reading this poem a while ago, I think it was freshman year, I really didn't like the poem at all because I thought it was basically talking bout a man that was just rushing his girlfriend to have sex with him for his own personal joys. But, now as I read it, I get a more in depth understanding, and although on the surface Robert Herrick is talking about sex, his ideas can be applied to other aspects of life. I can personally use carpe diem in my on life, by starting off getting my homework done on time. Sometimes I can procrastinate with my homework so that I have more time to do other things that I may, at the time, think is more important.
ReplyDeleteThe lines in the poem that had the most influence on me was, “And this same flower that smiles today/Tomorrow will be dying.” These two lines basically summarizes the whole poem and has the most meaning. Here Robert Herrick was trying to further depict that the days that we are currently living are the most crucial. We should enjoy everything that is happening today and live it to the fullest because we do not know what tomorrow will bring or not bring.
I especially liked the movie clip that was apart of out prompt because I had seen the movie before, but I never really paid attention to that specific part. Also, it helped me to further understand how I can use carpe diem in my everyday day life now. The poem was nice and had to be analyzed in order to see how it really related to me, but the movie made the poem more personal because Robin Williams was talking to other high school students. In essence, he was telling them that they should enjoy the day now, and achieve everything that they wanted to do, unlike the alumni of that school, because they just wasted their time and potential. Both the poem and clip have inspired me to definitely get everything that I want to do, or in other words, seize the day and take it into my own hands because in order for me to be the future, I have to invest now.

This poem made me feel like people should live in the now. How waiting and pushing things off could not always get done. In the poem it stats, “This same flower that smiles today Tomorrow will be dying.” This statement is the summary of what the gist of the poem is about or trying to convey. Although, I understand how the title relates to the poem in the beginning to I thought the poem was going to be about something else. Prior to reading it I thought the poem was going to deal with a virgin and how one needs to wait to lose ones virginity. When one waits it gives them time to think about the action of loosing their virginity. However, I was wrong.
ReplyDeleteCarper Diem is how I strive to live my life because I know the tomorrow is not promised. The best time to do anything is at that point in time not later because it’s not truly promised. When things aren’t promised people should take advantage of the things that you know will be there.
While reading the poem "To the Virgins, Make much of Time" by Robert Herreck I felt that this poem gave off a positive image of how we should not take life for granted and live life to its fullest. The lines from this poem that stood out to me the most was when the poet stated "And this same flower that smiles today Tomorrow will be dying." These lines stood out the most because it made me realize that we need to appreciate our life daily and the people that are in it because we never know what tomorrow is going to bring us.
ReplyDeleteCarpe Diem is associated with my life because I know that tomorrow is not promised so I live in the moment that i am living in. I make sure I appreciate my family members everyday of my life because you never know when anyones life is coming to a end.
While reading this poem, I was thinking about how the thought process of men has not changed much after all these years. The man in the poem is trying to convince a woman to have sexual intercourse with him. He’s trying to convey to her that tomorrow’s not promised and instead of saving her virginity, she should allow him to deflower her. That was many, many years ago yet; young boys and men still think the same way and try to convince women of the same things.
ReplyDeleteThere are many things in my life that carpe diem can apply to. I don’t wish to discuss them because they are rather personal. What I can say is, instead of dwelling on the past, I should focus on who makes me happy right now and not let things from my past affect things that could potentially make a wonderful future.
The poem made me think about death. The poem is basically saying seize the day because tomorrow you might not be able to enjoy it. Carpe Diem makes me want to live each day as if it were my last, which is hard and easy to do. The poem tells you to be happy about making the most out of each day. However even thoug your living your life to the fullest your only doing it because tomorrow you might day. The poem makes me happy but I also find it depresseing.
ReplyDeleteI like how the man in the poem was trying to persuade the woman to have sex with her though. Using Carpe Diem as an excuse was pretty clever. I know that men, and boys, still try to use that trick today.
Carpe Diem is associated in my life when I decide to take risks. Like the first time I went on an upside down roller coaster (that was only two years ago). My biggest fear was that the train would stop when I would be completely upside down. However, I convinced myself that there was no real chance of this happening and that I just needed to do it. I knew that if I didn't conquer my fear at that exact moment I would never do it. Now I love going on upside down roller coasters and I love getting that adrenline rush. Seizing the day doesn't always have to mean living life to the extreme; it can mean just conquering your fears.
This poem talks about some very interesting concepts that have to do with “seizing the day” as I read this poem I began to wonder what this poem was acutely talking about, I did not fully understand the poem until I read it for the 3rd time and watched the movie, “Dead Poets Society” 2 times.
ReplyDeleteThis poem is basically saying, the time that people get in there youthful days should never be wasted because the next day is not always promised to you. Things that we do in are younger life time should be done now, for that time that we have is not going to always be there. The quote that really stuck out to me the most was, “then be not coy, but use your time and while ye may, go marry; for having lost once your prime, you may forever tarry” This stuck to me the most because it is something that I truly believe in, as far as not wasting time and believing that we should not be so coy to think that we know every thing with out seizing the day to work for any thing.
Carpe Diem applies to my life every day; the one thing that I don’t like is not seizing the day. If there is ever a time that I didn’t seize the day I must have been pretty lazy on that day.
The poem “To the Virgins, To Make Much of Time” I believe has a great connection to Carpe Diem. Throughout the poem the author constantly say that time doesn’t stand still, it is constantly going. You have to take advantage of time and live life to the fullest. I often make bad choices that’s consequences do not allow me to enjoy the time I have as a teenager. I am denied opportunity to have memories that everyone should grow up having from being my age. Applying Carpe Diem to my life would consist of some life changes I would have to make. And after making those life changes I will then be able to make the type of decisions that can and will allow me to live my life to the fullest without anyone denying me that privilege.
